Vald Stoutsmith
Head of the Stoutsmith Clan (a.k.a. Sootbeard)
Dwarves are known for their craftsmanship in every corner of the Imperium, but none more so than the Stoutsmith Clan. Less concerned with statecraft than some of their kinsmen, the Stoutsmiths are still regarded as one of the eleven (now seven) great clans. And the patriarch of the clan is Vald, a smith and metalworker perhaps with no peer alive. He has forged arms and armor for over a century and created works for many of the great lord of the realms. Vald's works are known for their perfection in all aspects, craftsmanship, artistry, and especially enchantment. He is said to use runecraft in his engravings and inlays passed down from the Giant Age, before the dwarves had migrated to the Morningold Mountains. Some of his runic enchantments are even rumored to be relics of the giants themselves, though claiming so openly would likely be considered heresy and land one in the hot water of one of his quenching baths.
Vald commands no armies, levies no taxes, and writes no laws, but he and his family are exceedingly wealthy and influential in dwarven society. Staying in the good graces of him and his clan is a vital component of a successful political career.
