Marciellus Myst

(a.k.a. The Bloody Baron)

As a vampire lord with a nickname like "The Bloody Baron" one would be excused if thinking Marciellus Myst was some vile, bloodthirsty tyrant. However in reality this could not be further from the truth, or at least not in the way one likely imagined. He does command a small army of vampires and other undead servants, but uses them to make war against the Dragonlord Tenabrius. Marciellus utilizes his small kingdom on Blackcoal Island to contain the spread of the Black dragon's pestilence and influence. He is perhaps the most significant reason that trade can flow more or less freely between the Brightgrass Sea and Somerset Hills. As such, Marciellus is seen as a true friend and ally to the gnomes, halflings, drahkai, and most recently hobgoblins. Supplicants seeking the "blessing" of vampirism as a means to achieve immortality is not a phenomenon exclusive to the Black Mysts, however the majority of his force does not consist of vampires. Instead he uses Tenabrius' necromantic secrets against them, raising an army of unthinking, undead zombies to do his bidding.   If one was worried how an apparently good man acquires the bodies to fill out his ranks, let those worries be quelled and perhaps replaced with questioning. In one of the stranger occurrences anywhere across the Imperium, Marciellus regularly has volunteers who agree to be animated as mindless undead fodder in his war with the black dragon. Specifically, a small, exceedingly zealous group of drahkai have all pledged their bodies to him after their deaths, provided their then disembodied souls are well taken care of. The large, powerful dragonmen make excellent zombies, standing strong against enemy attacks and delivering punishing blows in return. It is also key to note that these are zombies, essentially puppets made of flesh, not true Risen warriors. The drahkai are explicitly clear in their hatred for the practice of rebinding deceased souls to the living plane. And Marciellus is true to his word, showing nothing but respect and dignity to the generous gifts bestowed upon him. This "Black Company" of undead warriors is well outfitted and commanded by Marciellus' "daughter," Aya.
