Kyn Slatefist
(a.k.a. The Gate Guardian)
Given their close association with the giants and affinity for rough, rocky terrain, it is understandable that mountainborn are often associated with earthborn when in fact the two races have little more in common than any other two. And in fact it is worth noting that giants were invested with elemental magic of all forms, not just earth. Thus after a moment of consideration it is not quite as puzzling to learn that one of the more prominent of the Nimbus Monks is the mountainborn, Kyn Slatefist. Kyn holds the title of Gate Guardian, the monk who escorts pilgrims up the treacherous mountain path to the Cloud Monastery. The "gate" he guards is really more of a spiritual one, a massive doorway made from the trunks of three mighty trees and engraved with holy mantras. Visitors are meant to cast off their metaphorical baggage when they pass through the gate, leaving their worldly troubles at the foot of the mountain. However, the "Guardian" aspect of his title is quite real. Should some hostile force make its way to the gate, they would need to get through Kyn and his massive great sword before assenting the long stairs up the mountain, a prospect few would find terribly appealing in any aspect.
