Dire Bats
Also called “night fliers” and “death wings,” dire bats are large, predatory, flying beasts that live in the blasted wastes.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Their bodies are covered in thick, dense fur, while their wings are connected by a thin membrane of skin. They struggle to take flight from the ground, and therefore roost hanging upside down in caves made from cooled lava tubes and inactive volcano calderas. Carnivorous, with long, biting fangs, they feed mostly on other nocturnal fliers like owls and normal bats, but are also known to skim water surfaces to hunt for fish.
Additional Information
Domestication
Kobolds have taken to taming them, though stealing juveniles hanging off of their mothers’ sleeping bodies is a difficult and dangerous task that is as likely to see an enterprising kobold falling to its death or being eaten by the same dire bat it sought to rob as actually be successful. Thus keeping a breeding stock is vital to the kobolds’ operations.
