The planet Sheol is named after a place in the bible depicted as a land of the dead. Keeping with this, the Rephaim, a race of humanoid gray-skinned giants who practice necromancy and other such forms of soulcraft were the first sapient beings on Sheol. Through their practices, they created the race of the Angels who quickly proved to be more powerful than them. Once humans came to occupy Sheol, the Rephaim were eventually forced into tunnels beneath the planet where they now reside. Humans live on the surface of Sheol, beneath the Angels who occupy islands among the clouds. Sheol's oceans are unoccupied by any sapient race and divide the four major continents that make up the surface of the planet. The oceans have a unique tendency to glow at night, the cause of this is unknown (believed to be from a mineral not found elsewhere) but the water has been proven to have no harmful effects despite its glowing. The Rephaim hunted and devoured the majority of non-oceanic creatures on Sheol before humans colonized the planet and brought their livestock with them, making the majority of non-aquatic life on Shoel creatures native to Earth. Humans tend to generally live on the outskirts of forests or in Grasslands, relying on the forests to provide for them. The angels, having deemed themselves the superior beings of the planet, moderate the resources that humans are allowed to use from above and have no problem with enforcing their dominion when they believe that humans have stepped out of line. Rephaim are known to sometimes come out of their tunnels and raid human villages, filling their stomachs with as many humans as they can. The angels allow this as it keeps the human population in check. The overall level of technology on the planet resembles that of 19th century Earth, the inability to generate gunpowder on Sheol's surface along with a general lack of minerals found elsewhere has lead to a halt in technological advances.
Sheol's discovery was kept secret and select people from across the world were chosen to colonize it by a secret committee. Several rockets were sent to Sheol from different locations across Earth. No one alive on Earth today is aware of the existence of Sheol or this project.
Humanity discovered the Rephaim and Angels within the first few hours of colonization. Roughly 60% of the initial settlers were killed. Those who survived had to quickly learn to adapt and fight back after finding there were no resources to keep their firearms useful.
The Rapture of Sheol is the name of the war where humans fought the angels to a standstill, earning enough of their respect to live on the surface and forcing the Rephaim into the center of the planet. The Four Horsemen (Madeline Cross, Cyrus the Black Lion, Johannes Niels de Visser, and Kazemaru) are often said to have been vital in obtaining humanity's right to survive.
