Gori (gor-ee)

A subspecies of beastkin with features reminiscent of primates such as gorillas, apes, and chimpanzees.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Male Gori are usually shown to possess dense muscle formations throughout their bodies, giving an average of the species strength comparable to that of nearly three human adults.   Females possess similar strength as well as significant dexterous skills demonstrated through climbing and combat.

Ecology and Habitats

Most of the known Gori communities are found within the jungles located within Dormelia's southern regions.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Gori are known to follow a heavily vegetarian diet, living predominantly off the abundant flora within the region. They have been known to eat meat as well via hunting game in the jungle, however, observers of the species note such meals are rather rare and seemingly reserved for special occasions for the village.

Behaviour

Given their remote location and relative isolation from broader society, Gori tend to be both cautious and curious when encountering outsiders.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Gori tribes seem to operate under a hierarchical structure with chiefs leading each village. Studiers of the species have noted little division of work by the gender of those participating with both men and women taking part in hunting and foraging duties as well as domestic tasks.

Facial characteristics

Gori are arguably bare a closer visual resemblance to human given the lack of special ears or other animal-like appendages often seen with other beastkin. The main feature separating them is the very pronounced nose structure of the Gori, closely resembling that of a gorilla.

Average Intelligence

Gori are often looked down upon, seen more as muscled brutes. The language barrier that exists between them and even most other beastkin tribes has not helped with changing that perception of their people.   Some, such as Grigori Staten in his thesis on the beastkin, have argued on behalf of the Gori. Such individuals have posed that their observed use and continuing development of sign language as their standard method of communication demonstrates intellect warranting study instead of dismissal.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Typical Gori posses a noticeably limited mastery of verbal communication. Some, who have had experiences outside of their villages, have proven capable of adapting to the use of common speech. The rest of the Gori instead display a form of sign language in place of spoken word.

I'm sorry that people don't treat the gori well due to their different form of communication. It sounds like there's a lot of potential for story in that, though.

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .

Thanks! One thing I'm trying to do with the demi-human races is play up the animal traits instead of them just being humans with cat ears and a tail.
