Scope
The motivation behind building Doreymos
I'm primarily building this world as a setting for Pathfinder games. I wanted to strike a middle ground between 'massive continent-spanning adventures' and 'intimate adventures in a local area' and figured that a colossal city would be the best option for that.
The goal of the project
Ideally, Doreymos should be the swiss army knife of campaign settings; there's room enough to do almost anything me and the players want in terms of setting. Intrigue? Social? Organization building? Combat? As long as I know what my players want, I can give it to them without having to reorganize my world from scratch.
Doreymos's Unique Selling point
Doreymos is essentially a city where not only has magic and technology fused together, but an entire country's worth of people are living in a megalopolis made of megalopoli. It's a cultural and magical melting pot where almost anything can happen.
Theme
Genre
High sci-fantasy, where technological miracles and magical spells are all but omnipresent in day to day society.
Reader Experience
Ideally, the world should feel wonderful to explore and find out more about. The Knowledge: History check should actually be something players want to use.
Reader Tone
Somewhere in the middle. Bad things happen, good things happen, and ultimately things only get really nasty if you decide to dig deep for them.
Recurring Themes
Hard work and devotion to a cause wins out more often than not.
Making an impact in an unfeeling world is difficult, but doable.
Even if there's enemies at every turn, someone somewhere will always support you.
Character Agency
Player agency can vary, but ideally I'd like players to have a mid-level impact on the world; enacting policy or regime changes, but rarely disrupting the balance on the city. Ultimately, the city will go on with or without them.
Focus
Government presence. How does society organize and maintain itself in this post-revolution world?
Guild interplay. What kind of relationships do the guilds have with each other? With the public? With life in general?
City impact. What makes the city unique? Why do people choose to live there? Why do people want to leave? How does the culture of the city affect the world?
Drama
The newest faction to take power,
The 4th Embry, is still a relatively young government. While they're doing their best, their sweeping policies and swift rise to power has left many of the other factions rather wary of them, and much of the populace is still struggling to adapt.
While most guilds have some sort of markedly important role in society, several have less than desirable designs for the city. Most of these are presumed dead, or to have never existed, like the
Order of Djan, but there's definitely a storm brewing in many of the districts.
The Clankbang Foundry are working on some sort of secret project at the behest of their
Smartleader but to what end or scale, no one knows for certain.
