You rush up the stained oaken loading platform seeing that you have missed the last caravan out of the remote town for several days. Distraught and wondering where you can spend the night, you turn and see a road that you had not noticed before. This road should not be there. It cuts through the dusk like a scar of pale light, where no path has ever been laid, and yet the wheels of a slow-moving caravan turn upon it without sound. The caravan consists of several overly wide and interconnected wagons that allow passage between them quite easily. Lanterns sway from blackened wood, their glow too steady, too cold. As it draws near, you notice the passengers, still as corpses, eyes open, watching nothing. The Caravan Master does not look at you when he speaks, but his voice finds you all the same: “You are late. There is still time to reach Orpheus Gate.”
Behind the last wagon, the world falls away into mist. Ahead, something vast and unfinished flickers against the horizon, like a memory struggling to exist. And though no one beckons you aboard, you feel it all the same, the quiet certainty that if you let this caravan pass, you will spend the rest of your life wondering what was waiting at the end of that road.
Hook
A mist-wreathed caravan rolls in at dusk. The Caravan Master offers passage. Inside are empty seats, silent travelers, and no one who remembers arriving.
Core Truth
The caravan carried the man who was meant to build Orpheus Gate, but he never arrived.
He was cast out before reaching the site. Without him, the Gate was never built. Without the Gate, the journey can never end.
The Caravan
A chain of enchanted wagons bound to a ghostly road.
• Those leaving are swallowed by the mist and returned altered with 1 level of exhaustion and disturbing visions.
• Time loops with repeated dialogue, resetting objects, etc…
• Each revealed truth destabilizes reality showing strange effects (whispers, gravity shifts, flickering forms).
Wagons
Quiet Wagon
• Passengers are frozen, shallow breath.
• One empty seat, unnaturally cold.
• When sitting there, receives visions related to a scholar dragged through caravan, thrown into the mist, clutching plans, later close up of blueprints.
Feast Wagon
• Food rots and refreshes endlessly.
• Cook repeats: “We never reached the site.”
• Ledger: Chief Architect, with name violently scratched out.
Relic Wagon
• Crates of tools, sigils, and materials.
• One container hums (DC 12 Arcana): bound blueprint infused with planar energy.
• Opening it causes surge of unstable magic and the caravan lurches with increasing violence.
Rear Wagon
• Looking out the back sees the road dissolve into the void.
• A skeletal framework of a half-built loading platform flickers in the distance.
• A lone figure stands beside it, waiting.
Key NPCs
Caravan Master
• Controlled, formal, increasingly brittle.
• Stats of a Mage/Wraith.
• Believes that he saved the world.
• His secret is that he cast out the architect, believing his work would unleash something terrible.
The Architect
• Appears in fragments, reflections, and echoes.
• Brilliant, visionary, obsessive, unstable, possibly dangerous.
• Now bound to the idea of the Gate he never built.
What Happened
The architect discovered what Orpheus Gate would truly become: a threshold not just for passage, but for things that should not return.
The Caravan Master cast him out to prevent the Gate’s completion, but in doing so, broke reality’s “journey.” This act ensured the Gate would never exist, and trapped the caravan in a journey with no destination.
Player Choices
Restore The Architect
• Return him to the caravan so that he can complete his journey.
• The Gate now fully manifests and the caravan arrives momentarily.
• Players exit the caravan and the other passengers disembark. As each passenger goes through the Gate, the players feel a gust of hot wind rush past them each time.
• Something ancient crosses through the Gate.
Reward / Curse:
• Each PC gains +1 to one ability score (max 20).
• Each PC is now marked by the Gate:
- Fiends recognize them instantly.
- Disadvantage on saves vs fiends’ charm/fright effects.
Uphold The Caravan Master’s Choice
• Prevent the architect’s return.
• The caravan stabilizes in an endless loop and before it blinks out of existence the players are thrown back to the location where they first joined the caravan.
• The world is spared, but nothing here is free.
Reward / Curse:
• Each PC gains Inspiration (or advantage once per session).
• Each PC suffers Lingering Disquiet:
- Disadvantage on first Wisdom save each day.
- Cannot benefit from a long rest once per week due to bad dreams.
Break The Road
• Destroy the relics and sever the magic.
• The caravan collapses between planes.
• The Gate remains unbuilt… for now.
• Players are thrown to a random location far from where they first joined the caravan.
Reward / Curse:
• Each PC gains a once-per-day reroll (any d20).
• Each PC gains Planar Instability:
- On a natural 1, trigger a wild magic effect (DM’s choice).
Twist
Once off of the caravan, the architect’s notes reveal the incoherent ramblings and maddening phrases indicating that the Gate was never meant for the living or the dead, it was meant to let ancient builders and servants in, to prepare the world.
Running It
• Emphasize fragments: blueprints, notes, symbols, muttered equations, half-finished runes, half-truths.
• Let players question: was the caravan Master right?
• Escalate instability as truth emerges (flickering wagons, impossible geometry).
• Keep the ending uncomfortable, no clean victory, only trade offs.
