Desmodeus

"Desmodeus"   This is an algae infected with a fungus that causes the skin to become red and eventual hair loss. Prolonged exposure results in the individual becoming completely red and hairless, resembling a stereotypical demon. Encounters with such an individual usually end badly for the infected.

Transmission & Vectors

Transmitted through contact with infected algae in swampy water. Humanoid becomes infected through prolonged exposure to the algae. Cuts and sores on the body hasten the transmission.

Causes

Coming into contact with algae infected with the Desmodesmus Armatus fungus.

Symptoms

Similar to fungal infection and turns the skin a deep red color. Fast Spreading.

Treatment

Treatment is available from a healer, cleric, or apothecary to diagnose and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Recovery occurs in about a week.

Prognosis

Conditions will continue to worsen over time with affects becoming more drastic and wide spread. Eventually all skin will become deep red and hair will fall out, accompanied by sever weight loss and weakness.

Affected Groups

All mammals and mammalian humanoids are subject to possible infection.

Hosts & Carriers

Any animal coming in contact with the infected water can carry the disease.

Prevention

Avoid contaminated water, particularly swamps and marshy areas.

Epidemiology

Not considered contagious. Those infected can also contaminate clean water by being immersed in it for a period of time and any subsequent visitors may be subject to becoming infected from the newly contaminated water.

History

Cases of Desmodeus are rare but concentrated in and around swamps, mashes, fens, and stagnant water areas. Those infected are often thought to be demons and are usually hunted down by the overzealous.

Cultural Reception

People are afraid of the infected and take great care to avoid them and in some case, try to dive them out of the community. Those with long term infection are seen as demons and often hunted down and killed outright. Fortunately friendly clerics, healers, and apothecaries can usually find, concoct, or pray for remedies and will help out the infected so as to prevent localized contagion.
