Nirlelen Claw

Short omnivores, very plump with wiry fur above their thick coarse coat. They have round large noses, wide paws with stubby claws. They have keratin horns that have fused with the skin on their ears, allowing them some movement with the horn's direction.   They have a mild temperment, and their preferred foods are insects, berries, roots, and grazing certain stalks of oats. In the wild, they are motivated by dry meats strips and small packed bars of grains and leaves.   They sport short but hard claws. More thick toenails than claws, they pack a more blunt hit that slash, and are used to keep predators at bay rather than hunt. Their low bark and raising their fur can deter smaller predators.   They have a large tail, were their wriy fur ends at the base of the tail, lifting up from the corse coat that ends in a large heavy bulb shape. It's rather short, so when they lay down to rest they tend to tuck it under their body and rest on it, as it provides a large amount of heat.   They use their tail to communicate as well, mainly three different positions. Upwards is alert, straight out is a warning, and fluffed is aggression. When on the hunt for a meal in the wild, they have been seen to sweep the tip of their tail along the ground and circle around for food, trying to find roots and tubers to eat.   They can become quite attached to those they pack with, including humans that tame them. Loyal to a fault, the Nirlelen Claw will protect their chosen pack until they are defeated.   A popular species for the Mailhand profession, especially in locations and routes where it snows regulary.   For a uniform they are equip with a small blanket saddle on their back, able to carry their owner short distances in enivornments difficult for a human to travel. If not carrying a human, they can be hitched up with a mailhand's bag or various equipment.   A short lead is kept hooked on their back of their necks, though rarely used, mostly to lead the monster if it gets spooked. Thick leather straps cover their lower forearms, holding in place a padded cloth shoe to protect them from traveling long distances over harsh terrian.
"Have you seen my pup sweep the floor? He's a little slow; I've seen the claws circle once and even twice, but mine seems to forget, and will sweep the floor until his tail is matted and worn, dirt floor polished as if it was a rock, nose raw and sniffing so loud. I want to keep with me all the time. Imagine hiring him to clean my cabin floor.   His little toes clacking along as he walks. A constant workout for his arms since he's mind's getting none."
