Dlynaeth continent

Geography

  • Dlynaeth lies on the southern hemisphere of its world
  • It's roughly 4000 by 3500 km, maybe a little smaller
  • Dlynaeth can be roughly split into five areas: north, south, west of the Kynfesan, east of the Kynfesan, and the islands
  • As can be surmised, the Kynfesan Mountains sort of dominate the continent, in the sense that they are the most prominent geographical feature.

Ecosystem

  • Earth or earth-like species with some magical additions
  • Also the humanoid folk evolved which in at least several cases clearly had some magical input.
  • Ecosystems are closely tied to what is known as the magical aura of an area

Climate

  • Dlynaeth's climate ranges from the subtropical in the north to the coolly temperate in the south.
  • The part of Dlynaeth west of the Kynfesan mountains catches far more rain than the eastern side, which is pretty dry.
  • A cold ocean current runs up from the south along the western coast, causing a Mediterranean climate
    • This fades to a more temperate, humid climate further inland towards the mountains
    • Further south, the climate is more coastal temperate
  • A warm ocean current runs down from the north along the eastern coast, with the islands and bays there causing a more stable temperate for the eastern mainland
    • The eastern coastal areas of the mainland have hot summers, wet in the north and south but with dry, cold winters to the east of the Kynfesan.
    • The island are largely coastal temperate, with drier climates oceanward due to their coastal mountains
    • This is partly what causes the subtropical climate in the northern areas
  • The northern part is also north of the 30 degree line and therefore tends to be a lot wetter, catching rain from the eastern winds.
  • The area directly east of the Kynfesan mountains are largely cool desert and steppe.
  • The southern area is almost fully temperate, getting colder the further south one goes and with dry but very cold winters on the coasts just past the southern coastal mountain ranges.

Natural Resources

  • The southeast is rich in forest, but although much of the other humid, temperate areas have plenty of trees it's not an excess
  • There are 11 naturally magic-rich areas in Dlynaeth, which each have their own unique magical aura
  • There are also 4 fae-rich areas, which are strange areas and mostly avoided by regular folk, but they are full of unique creatures and folk with incredible magical skills
  • Gold and silver are more prominent in the mountains in the eastern areas
  • Western Dlynaeth, especially the southern half of that, has lots of freshwater available, as well as the fish and other organisms you would expect from that, plus the easy trading opportunities that waterways bring.
  • Meanwhile the eastern coasts and islands profit a lot from the great bay and the shelter of the islands so there are lots of saltwater fish and sea fruits
  • The north is probably great for growing grains with the high temperatures and lots of rain
Dlynaeth
