Khurund Pillars

The Khurund Pillars (Urkesh: Khurundi Gruumsh, lit. 'fingers of Gruumsh') are sea stacks off the eastern cliffs of the Urkesh Highlands.

History

In the midst of the Titanomachy, the water titan Istishia sent one of his pet krakens to attack the coastal regions of the eastern Urkesh Highlands, hoping to destroy the orcs' defenses to make way for a storm giant invasion. The kraken attacked the southern end of the coast, where it was met in battle by a powerful orc shaman named Gruumsh. Their battle culminated with Gruumsh raising pillars of earth from the ground to impale the kraken, lifting its bloody corpse several hundred feet into the air. Gruumsh' victory forestalled the storm giant invasion and allowed the Urkesh defenders to go on the offensive. For his display of power and heroism, the battlefield was named Khurundi Gruumsh and became a sacred site for the Urkesh people following the hero's ascension to godhood.   As the highlands were battered by earthquakes during the Sundering, Khurundi Gruumsh slid into the sea, so that all that remained were the pillars sticking up from the ocean off the coast, the skeleton of the massive kraken still impaled upon them. During the War of Seven Khans, the Saltbiters built a bridge from the cliffs of the highlands to the largest of the Khurund Pillars and built the fortress of Kraykenjad within the kraken's skeleton.
