Dragon Soul

The Dragon Souls were five magical gemstones gifted to the chromatic dragons by their diety, Tiamat. Each stone granted its bearer a fraction of Tiamat's divine power, making them stronger, faster, giving them access to her divine magic, and lengthening their natural lifespan.

History

The original bearers of the Dragon Souls were chosen by Tiamat from each of the five chromatic dragon flights in the lead up to the Dracomachy. The power of the Dragon Souls allowed these already powerful dragons to grow into massive greatwyrms who would lead their flights in conquering the plane.
The dwarves learned of the the Dragon Souls' existence and knew their destruction was the only way to halt the dragons' conquest. Over the course of several battles, during which dwarven heroes confronted each of Tiamat's chosen, the stones were shattered one by one, each stone's destruction weakening the chromatic dragons and allowing the dwarves to mount a successful counteroffensive against Tiamat and her brood. Moreover, several of the dwarves responsible for destroying the Dragon Souls would ascend to godhood as a result of their heroic deeds, becoming the members of the Morndinsamman that would eventually banish Tiamat to the Nine Hells.
In the aftermath of the Dracomachy, each of the retreating greatwyrms took a shard of their Dragon Soul with them, while the rest of the shattered remnants were scattered across the plane. Though each shard provided but a fraction of their full gemstone's power, they still allowed Tiamat's chosen to pass their power and knowledge on to future dragons who could continue their queen's great work. Each fragment would be referred to as a Dragon Core; they would house the soul of each of Tiamat's champions upon the greatwyrm's death. The rest of the shards were scattered throughout the plane to later be recovered by explorers and adventurers, though none would ever be able to utilize the fragments to their full potential, as that was reserved for descendents of Tiamat's chosen.
As time passed and the history of the Dracomachy turned into legend, knowledge of the Dragon Souls faded from memory. Several shards of the Dragon Souls have been recovered throughout the ages, their inherent magical essence used to craft powerful weapons and wondrous items or utilized by wizards to enhance their arcane craft. While there still exist some books that recount the history of Dracomachy and the creation of the Dragon Souls, the true nature of these gems is known only to the members of the Chromatic Pact, five chromatic dragon descendants of Tiamat's chosen who had uncovered their ancestors' Dragon Cores. The Pact seeks to reassemble a complete Dragon Soul, the power of which would allow them to free Tiamat from her prison in the Nine Hells and reignite the Dracomachy.
