Carthalion

(a.k.a. Endless Magic, The Dancer, Lion's Song, The Primal Song, Carth the Lion)

Carthalion is the old god of magic, beauty, and the arts in the Elechyreon and the patron deity of the Mosi. Carthalion is venerated as the source of artistic and arcane inspiration by many bards, wizards, and sorcerers across Divostra. Belief in them is maintained through legendary tales and heroic songs of their exploits, which often focus on Carthalion tricking or seducing other gods in order to steal their magic and bestow it onto mortals.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Carthalion appears as a furred, lion-headed humanoid with a multichromatic mane, adorned in deep black robes that seem to swirl with a mist of arcane energy as they move. This depiction is most likely inspired by the fact that the Mosi were the first to spread knowledge of the Primal Song, thus the god of magic would resemble the catfolk. The god is never without their golden lute, either strapped across their back or slung under one arm and ready to play. Their digitigrade feline feet are always bare and with every dancing step the air around them fills with the sound of music played to the rhythm of their walk.

Personal history

The Primordial Titans' initial plan for Divostra was to create a plane filled with creatures who would worship the Titans as their divine rulers, allowing the Titans tapping into the power of their collective will to amass arcane power from the Thaumic Weave. To this end, the first creatures they created were the dragons, inherently magical beings with long lives and vast intelligence. However, following the chaining of Kai'ossh, the dragons began to question the omnipotence of the Titans. Younger dragons started to tell stories of the Primal Song, their name for the Thaumic Weave, and how it allowed magic to resonate with creatures on the Material Plane. By finding these resonant frequencies, the dragons learned how to tap into the powers of the Weave and began practicing primitive forms of spellcasting.   For centuries, this knowledge remained a secret known only to dragons, until the arrival of Mosi explorers migrating from southern Vestan to Urdravrak after years of poor harvests. The Mosi discovered draconic writing about the Primal Song, which were soon deciphered by their scholars and religious leaders, allowing the Mosi to uncover the secrets of controlling the Weave. When the Mosi migrated back to the mainland, they brought the knowledge of the Primal Song with them.   From there, knowledge of the Primal Song spread throughout the plane, and the secrets of spellcasting became known to Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs, and the other mortal races. This new understanding of the nature of the Weave led many to question the role the Titans played in the natural hierarchy. Bards, religious leaders, and magic practitioners began to weave stories of a mythical being older than the Titans who brought the Song to Divostra so that it might be safe from those who would misuse it. These stories flooded the Thaumic Weave with belief to the point that it would finally coalesce into the old god known as Carthalion.
