Asgorath

Asgorath (a.k.a. The Ur-Dragon)

Asgorath was the Old God of creation, formerly a member of the Prime Pantheon, and the patron deity of all dragonkind before the Titanomachy.   Appearing during the Divine Epoch, Asgorath remained neutral in most conflicts during the early history of Divostra, refusing to involve itself unless the matter proved an existential threat to dragonkind. Its hand was finally forced in the Titanomachy, when the Primordial Titans attempted to destroy and reform Divostra. Asgorath sacrificed its corporeal form to become one with the Thaumic Weave, creating an arcane barrier between Divostra and the elemental planes known as Asgorath's Ban intended prevent future incursions by the banished Titans.

Personal history

In the beginning, the Primordial Titans came to Divostra, drawn by the power of the Thaumic Weave and the potential for godhood it offered. The titans understood the nature of the Weave and its relationship with belief, and surmised that enough belief tied to the weave would allow them to achieve deification. The four titans shaped the realm into a habitable plane and filled it with mortal creatures, intending for them to worship the titans so they could safely draw on the power of the Weave.   The dragons were one such race created by the titans, one whom the titans made intelligent, powerful, and most importantly prideful. It was this pride that ensured the dragons would never worship their creators. The dragons bore witness to the creation of Kai'ossh and blamed the titans short-sightedness in creating beings who would fear oblivion, leading to the birth of such a destructive entity. Dragonkind shunned the Primordials, their leaders proclaiming that the Titans had usurped a plane which was intended only to be ruled by a perfect being, which they referred to as the Ur-Dragon.   This belief formed Asgorath from the Thaumic Weave, a massive dragon the size of a mountain with power that could rival the Titans. As Asgorath ascended from beneath the southern ocean, it brought the ground up with it, forming the continent of Urdravrak. The dragons saw the creation of Urdravak as a divine gift and claimed the new continent as the home of all dragonkind.   The metallic dragons were quick to follow Asgorath to this new continent, eager to leave the other mortals to their own devices while the dragons flourished in a land made for them. However, the chromatic dragons believed the entire world belonged to the dragons. Many of them enjoyed high status ruling over territory filled with creatures that both feared and worshipped them, and the chromatic dragons chose to continue lording over these fledgeling civilizations rather than start their own with the more peaceful metallics. The metallic dragons lived in peace with one another in Urdravrak, their society formed around their shared worship of the Ur-Dragon.   Centuries later, Asgorath would be visited in his sanctum by the dragon god Tiamat during her preparations to conquer Divostra. Tiamat entreated the Elder God to rally the metallic dragons to her side, arguing that his followers believed the Ur-Dragon was meant to shape Divostra into the perfect plane for dragonkind. Asgorath balked at her suggestion, countering that the perfect plane for dragonkind did not require the exclusion of non-dragons. Tiamat was incensed, declaring herself the true Ur-Dragon, as a proper Ur-Dragon was meant to rule and conquer.   Asgorath chose not to get involved in the ensuing Drachomachy, knowing that his power was just as much tied to the belief of the chromatic dragons as it was the metallics. He knew open conflict between the two factions would hinder his power to combat the Primordial Titans, still furious at the dragons for shunning their creators and thus an ever-present existential threat. Upon Tiamat's banishment, Asgorath felt his suspicions confirmed; with each chromatic dragon hunted and slaughtered, his power weakened. He was still a match for one or two of the Titans, but should they ever combine forces, he doubted he would be able to stop them from wiping out the dragons once and for all.   His power would finally be tested in the Titanomachy, when the Primordial Titans declared the plane a failed project and sought to wipe out everything, so they might start anew. Asgorath rallied the metallic dragons and joined the rest of the mortal races of Divostra in combatting the Titans and their armies of giants and elementals. Asgorath fought the Primordial Titans one by one, banishing each of the Elemental Lords back to their respective Elemental Plane. Realizing the need to protect the dragons from the interplanar threat of the Titans, Asgorath tapped into the Thaumic Weave. He sacrificed his body to cast a barrier spell that blocked creatures from the Elemental Planes from entering the Prime Material Plane.
