Kokopelli

Kokopelli is a constellation that dances in a circle in the northern night sky.

History

Legend says that Kokopelli didn't feel that travelling the world to spread wisdom and joy was doing enough to raise peoples spirits after the great cataclysm.  So he devised a plan so he could guide all the people of Discordia.  He climbed to the highest mountain of Kord and played his flute, all day and all night for 13 nights, never stopping for a break, until he drew the attention of Selene, goddess of the moon.  She came down from the sky and sat at Kokopelli's feet to listen to his beautiful music.  As soon as she sat Kokopelli, stopped playing and walked off the mountain.  Disappointed Selene went back into the sky.  The next night Kokopelli returned, playing his flute, and again Selene returned to sit and en is music, again as she sat, Kokopelli stopped playing and walked off without a word.  Growing upset, Selene went back into the sky.  The next day Kokopelli returned to mountain top and played, Selene watching from the heavens did not return, determined to not let Kokopelli walk away from her again.  Kokopelli continued to play for 3 more nights and on the 18th night Selene returned.   Before she sat to listen she stopped Kokopelli and asked.  "Why do you walk away from me when I travel all this way to listen?"  "Because" said Kokopelli, "You sit up in the sky and watch everything below you, but I can only see what I see from this mountain, how can I possibly play something so beautiful as what you can see every night, when all I have to inspire me is this small portion of the world?" "But you play so beautifully Kokopelli, why do ask for more, when you already make the earth grow, and joy flow through the land?" "Because, I know I can do more, if only I could see all of Discordia, I know it would inspire me to play something so beautiful, that it would make the whole of the land sing back to me in harmony." "But, the sky is my domain. You could only ever visit." "That would be enough sang Kokopelli. "Only a short visit, and I would play for you every night I am there." Convinced Selene brought him into the sky to play for her.  The next night Selene returned and listened to Kokopelli play the most beautiful piece he had ever played and Selene danced across the sky as she listened, in awe of his music.  At the end of the night she went to Kokopelli, and thanked him for the beautiful music. "but it is time to go, you mus return to earth, for I grow small in the night sky and you must return while I have the power to send you back." "Please let me stay another night." Said Kokopelli. "I see even greater things farther north, and there is so much I haven't seen yet." "I will take you farther north, but it can only be one more night." "Thank you, I will make sure my next song is even better, I promise." The next night Selene danced across the sky again to Kokpelli's music, and Kokopelli played all through the night.  As the sun began to rise Kokopelli did not stop playing, and Selene so entranced in his music di not see the sun rising.  As Kokopelli's music met the dawn, Helios noticed the joyful gods dancing to the music and his anger lit the sky red. "How dare you bring another god into our domain" Helios thundered.   "It was just for a visit, he plays so beautifully and we dance all night across the sky" Selene answered.  "This is our domain" rebutted Helios. "We mus defend the sky, or all the gods will find their way here and we will no longer be worshiped as the sun and the moon" "It is to late" said Kokopelli.  "I have already learned the song of the stars, and people have already begun to follow me music as we traveled north, pointing there way as they travel.  You no longer have the power to cast me out." "We shall see, cried Helios as he cast Kokopelli from the sky, but Kokopelli had befriended the stars with his song, and they shielded home.  In his anger Helios banished Selene from the sky and that night, no moon show to light the way for the people of Discordia.  Instead Kokopelli wreathed in stars shined brightly all through the night, as a beacon for all.  The next day Kokopelli again played for Helios, and again he tried to banish the trickster god, but again he was shielded.  Over the next 8 days this continued, and Kokopelli continued to thwart Helios, while Selena continued to gain her strength back.  On the 9th day Selena as strong as she could get grabbed onto Kokopelli and attempted to pull him from the sky.  Again Kokopelli danced across the sky playing his flute.  They struggled for 9 more days, and Selene slowly drained of power in the struggle, again growing dark in the night sky.  This continued for many cycles, until at last summer came, and Helios at his strongest partnered with Selene to drag Kokopelli from the sky back to Discordia.  Kokopelli knew the gods power though, and when summer turned to fall, Kokopelli snuck back up into the sky to guide the people of Discordia once again.   That is why Selene loses her power and goes dark in the night sky every 18 days, and that is why you can not find Kokopelli dancing in the night sky during the summer.
