The Flow Down
General Summary
The slog from the boat to the tower was tiresome. This spit of land offered no trees for shade, and no distraction from the monotonous trek up the sandy trail to the tower. Ahead, the solitary silhouette of the tower loomed.
After an hour or so, the sun beating down constantly and the screech of gulls filing the air, a set of stone steps crept closer. An obelisk of carved dark stone rising above them. Time and distance dragged the obelisk closer. As it reared up in the skyline, a tower looms casting a long shadow over the party.
Having wiped the gore from the graven faces of the obelisk after dispatching the strange creatures that had gathered here, undead minions set on watch atop a couple of squat stone pillars. The obelisk was warm to the touch and the sides were covered in strange carvings that seemed to squirm and change under the watchful eyes of the two observers.
As the zombies settled into their perches, there was loud click and the sound of gears whirring to life. The large metal door which had been hanging half-open at the mouth of the tower started to rise with a grinding, grating sound.
The interior of the tower yielded a cache of supplies and the writings of the last crew that was sent here. Ramblings about those who had been lost and a hidden entrance to a complex below the tower.
A cursory glance over the stonework revealed a section of wall which was a slightly different texture to the rest. A prod of the stone caused the wall to slide across and reveal a dark staircase. Further investigation showed that the stairs led to a room. The room contained the mouldering remnants of some adventuring gear. And a door. And, above the door, a thin glass vial of a liquid. The liquid had a faint green glow and occasionally spat gobs of itself about. The floor around the door was pitted and scarred. Terrible shame. Makes it hard to sweep and ruins the finish.
I had other matters to attend to, so I missed the next bit. But I made sure that I pointed out all the bits that would need a really good clean to Grasshopper. And I must admit, I didn’t expect the sharks on the next floor. Someone’s going to have to fix that door too. This lot are worth keeping an eye on. I hope they don’t draw the attention of anything unsavoury.
