The Monster Chest Card Game

A favored game by children, adults, cheaters and even some members of the cloth, The Monster Chest is a wildly popular card game that can be found played in bars, streets, and homes by anyone of any race and social status.

History

The Monster Chest was invented during the Era of Order by a Halfling ranger named Neris Fernfoot. Neris was a member of the Thicket Rangers when she came up with the concept for the card game after slaying a Gryphon that had been terrorizing the city. For months, Neris wrote out the rules for Monster Chest, even creating the first cards for the game which were actually hand carved on wooden slats. Neris played the game with her fellow rangers at local bars, but she noticed that when she would play, people would gather around and ask to play. Seeing enterprise, in this interest, Neris toured the bars of Thicket and let people play her game. A human trader from Hearthfield named Benja Oatcrest approached Neris and offered her 2 gold for every deck of cards he could make using stacks of paper in his possession and the wooden slats as ink stamps. Neris, appealed by the offer obliged and the first card decks for Monster Chest were made. Benja traveled Midvail, selling his decks while Neris staying in Thicket, but they were not separated for long as Benja quickly returned, having made such a profit off of the game he purchased an enchanted stamping tool and spellbook paper to create weather and crinkle resistant cards. Benja offered Neris a fair deal for her cards, and the two watched as they literally printed themselves into nobility. After Neris’ passing. Benja and his family retired to Hearthfield where they continued to print and distribute Monster Chest games. As of the Era of Change’s Great Disturbance, the Oatcrest still owns the only master copies of the original card game.

Execution

The Monster Chest is a card game played by 2 or more individuals. Each player starts the game with 5 tallies. Each player has a deck of cards with 36 set cards separated into three categories: Monsters, Demons, and Divines. Monsters take tallies, Divines protect and add tallies, and Demons rely on the flipping of a gold coin to decide if they help the player, or hinder them. The goal of the game is to reduce the opponent’s tally count to 0. Best 2 out of 3 wins the match.   The Monster Chest has many different variants depending on where in Dioya you play. In the Clansplains, the Divines have been replaced with Fey and even cultural figures from Goblinoid Mythology. In Nirvania, the Devic Order have made their own version of the game called The Mortal Chest that replaces every card with Mortal, Beast, and Celestial.
