Merydia
The Elven race’s relationship with the rest of their home continent of Midvail has always been one steeped in a light but apparent sense of superiority. After all, as far as the Deva enforced BiDivine religion dictates, it is the Elves who are the closest of the Midvail races to the holier, Eternal gods. Most Elves don’t believe BiDivine creation myth to be entirely true, but many do consider themselves at least slightly above the human, dwarven, Halfling, and gnomish races. No more apparent is this sense of separation than in the establishment of the country of Merydia.
Over the course of thousands of years, the continent of Midvail was simply known as Midvail. In the mountainous West were the Dwarves, the planes and fields of the center of the continent were the Humans and Halflings, and from Mt. Fae to the Eastern ocean were the Elves and their fay touched slaves, the Gnomes. Through the Eras of Establishment and Order, the Elvan cities of Tivian, Thystys, PearlMyre, and more grew in size and developed their own economic differences such as Tivian’s Oligarchy, Brevia’s Theocracy under the Nirvanian Devic Order, and Pearlmyre’s Council of Three democracy. Just like the Kingdoms of central and Western Midvail, the Elven civilizations of the East were united in many ways, but independent of one another. Unlike Western Midvail though, the Elven civilizations rarely warred with each other, leaving their differences to be decided by individuals, espionage, and subterfuge rather than armies and invasions. To the Elves, the West was barbaric, especially as the Era of Change began and The Great Wars of Midvail raged. No efforts to change anything dramatically were made until the failure of the wars of the Tantivire Empire.
When Tantivire approached the city of Forgevail’s Ailla Family for a trade deal, the agreement put highly designed swords in the hands of the Tantivire army and for the first time, an Elven city directly aligned with a combatant in a Great Midvail War. This agreement lead to Midvail approaching Tivian for an alliance and Brevia to embargo goods from Tantivire. Tivian never officially sent troops, but volunteer Elven soldiers who wished to serve under the Chilved/Hearthfield alliance were more than willing to do so. The war proved to be devastating, with few Elvan soldiers returning home and most of them, empty handed.
Entering the politics of central Midvail proved to not only be fruitless, but it scared many elves into action. This fear pulsated through the Elven cities and eventually, a summit was called in Pearlmyre. Representatives from every major city and civilization in Eastern Midvail attended, with the summit lead by Pearlmyre’s Council of Three. The summit resulted in two major laws put in place around the entire region, the first was that a border stretching from south to north of Mt. Fae would be established and all areas east of the mountain would be members of the country of ‘Merydia” (The Elvan script for Middle Country.) The second would be that while the cities within Merydia were their own sovereign nations, a unifying law that held Merydia would be that there would be absolutely no future participation of any kind in military conflicts involving the rest of Midvail (to be called Gaia.) This meeting was known as the Merydia Summit.
The establishment of Merydia was the start of a growing divide between Merydia and Gaia. The Dwarves and Humans took this split down their previously perceived unified continent as a slight and many civilizations refused to trade over the border established by the elves. While Merydia was united, travel and trade took a massive hit, only remedied slightly when Chilved’s King William married Pricilla Glenwraek of Pearlmyre.
With the establishment of The Era of Change’s Great Disturbance, many believe that the Merydia Summit’s laws have been broken. The Council of Three’s decision to join the League of Every Organized Nation directly infringes on the promise that Merydia would stay out of the wars of Midvail.
