Spacekeepers Organization in Desolation | World Anvil

Spacekeepers

The Spacekeepers are the primary form of law enforcement in Desolation, empowered by and working under the Council of Stars.

Structure

The Spacekeepers operate in a heirarcy of roles. The highest-ranking members of the Spacekeepers report directly to the Council of Stars, and are some of the very few people who have seen the Council members in person - albeit behind veils. These members are known as Novakeepers, and there is one per council member. They are kept under constant surveilance from the council, with trackers embedded into the backs of their necks. They are also required to take vitamin supplements provided by the Council. The Novakeepers are assigned areas of Known Space which they are responsible for coordinating the Spacekeepers within.

Directly below the Novakeepers are the Sunkeepers, which are each assigned sub-divisions of the area assigned to their Novakeeper. Within these areas, they organise patrols, maintain personelle, and give daily reports to their supervisors. They are also required to weat trackers in the backs of their necks.

Below the Sunkeepers are the Starkeepers, who file paperwork, as well as being responsible for any investigative work that the Sunkeepers or their superiors require. Technically below the Starkeepers are the Moonkeepers, who still report directly to the Sunkeepers. They lead patrols, and often act as the faces of the organisation, interacting with civilians, giving presentations, and leading less important press conferences. Both Starkeepers and Moonkeepers wear trackers embedded in their upper arms.

The lowest rank among the Spacekeepers are simply known as Spacekeepers, and do the majority of the minutiae that keeps the organisation running. They do wear trackers, though these are not embedded into their skin like the higher ranks. Instead, they have tracking gear that they are required to wear whenever on the job. When they clock out, they are allowed to take off this tracking equipment, but they must store it somewhere in their homes.

Loyalty of the Spacekeepers
It is theorised by those outside of the organisation that the Council does not just select people that are already loyal to them to join the Spacekeepers, but instead chooses people to make loyal to them. Some believe that the Council is capable of mind control, though others dismiss this by claiming that mind control on that scale would be way too difficult and annoying to maintain. Others have posited a theory that they are somehow drugging the Spacekeepers.

Becoming a Spacekeeper

While some do apply to become Spacekeepers, the majority are chosen from the general populace (excluding the upper classes). Upon becoming an adult, every citizen is required to register with the Council, and if they are chosen, must serve as a Spacekeeper for a minimum of four years. Most people chosen this way, while initially having reservations or even despising their job, will by the end of the four years choose to continue their job as a Spacekeeper. Their loved ones will observe a gradual change of heart about their job, turning into genuine enthusiasm for their work.

Selection

The method and criteria the Council uses to select new Spacekeepers is very unclear. The Council claims that loyalty to the state is a big part of the selection criteria, but this is not reflected particularly well in their actual selections. Some think that it is entirely arbitrary.

Reporting for Duty

Once a person has been selected, they will be sent a summons notifying them of this. They then have a week to prepare or travel, before they must report to the main offices on MOON-XV. If they do not, they are considered a traitor to the Council and are hunted down and prosecuted.

Training

The Spacekeepers go through a rigorous training process before they are able to join the ranks of the organisation officially. The training program lasts a full year, and is not included in the required four years of service that selectees are subject to. At least part of this program can be skipped through adequate physical testing, but the minimum amount of time someone can spend in this program before becoming a Spacekeeper is 3 months.
