Grand Admiral Austyx
Grand Admiral Austyx
“I shall bring a new era of peace to this sea. I was there to see the people languish under a weak government. I watched as it fell short of their needs and fell. Seeing no others seize the initiative, I began on my mission to bring about a new order. Yet revolution comes not without conflict, and many in these seas are unwilling to see a new power rise. Such is to be expected, for fear of order is perpetuated by those who believe such an overseer will not protect them. In my vision for a new sea, they will not need to fear such weakness.”-Grand Admiral Austyx
The Black Iron Navy
Austyx speaks little of his past, few if any will recognize him from before he enlisted in the navy. Most know him only as the current Grand Admiral and founder of the Black Iron Navy. Two and a half decades ago, the Great Storm government collapsed as pirate queen Morgana pillaged and terrorized the seas. Many marines simply left the cause, unwilling to try and set up a new organization amidst the chaos both inside and outside Port Brimsey. Austyx was among the few that remained, along with Eideard Fau-wasenkin and a few others still loyal to the fallen Central Star Navy. For more than two decades, the Black Iron Navy that Austyx established has reigned in the central islands of the Great Storm. The Rising Tide
“It is no mystery to me that many on the outer isles wish for my death. My concern, however, is that such individuals are connected. Whether by one or by many.” “Likely I leap to a conclusion when I say this: but I suspect my nearest brush with death to be connected to this group or person. Someone attempted to assassinate me on Brigton by rifle. I live only because my assailant’s aim was not true.”
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
While his age is beginning to catch up with him, Austyx is nevertheless in incredible physical condition. He trains daily in athletics, finesse, and endurance. In stature, he is of seemingly average proportion—moderate shoulders, waist, general structure—which would make him difficult to spot in a crowd if not for his upright stature and choice of clothing. To maintain his physical capability, Austyx trains in the Black Iron Navy's gym daily. Even when out on a mission, he trains resolutely every day.
“The mind and body are one. The neglect of one will impact the other. He who trains his body yet not his mind shall find his strength outmatched by one wise enough to fight him from whence he cannot fight back. He who trains his mind yet never his body shall find that his mind can shield him from no dedicated blade.”-Austyx
Facial Features
Chiseled is the sole way to define the Grand Admiral’s facial structure. His jaw is strong and shapely, with harsh edges that remain apparent despite Austyx’s age. His eyes appear like tempered steel—unyielding and cold. His hair is neatly styled, of medium-short length and rusty brown in hue.
Yet for as orderly as Austyx’s appearance is, there is one blemish on his face: a long, thin scar that runs across his forehead. A rifle bullet, and a reminder that not all accepts his orderly vision.
“My interest in Austyx is mostly professional... mostly. For his age, the man is—how you say—rather fetching.”-Layvira Metellus
Apparel & Accessories
Austyx’s daily wardrobe consists of a simple, white button-up shirt, slacks dyed the color of squid ink, and a signature iron-grey overcoat. His choice of attire rarely changes, and when it does, it is not without reason. Most often this occurs when Austyx travels to warmer or cooler islands, for that need not be explained.
“Dress will tell you a great deal about one—they who flourish vast sums of gold at attires of fine frivolity simply to impress or impose others should not be asked to understand the wise. For if they did, they would know their appeal impresses only those who are foolish enough to think that such outlets are worthwhile. Uniform serves to designate and maintain an air of professionalism, not to flaunt.”-Austyx
Mental characteristics
Education
Poppyrise—a common, lower-class university—was the school of Austyx’s youth, a fact many find surprising considering its mediocrity in comparison to his brilliance. The true source of his education, however, was how he studied worthwhile topics to their fullest in his leisure time. Few in The Great Storm have the understanding of its history that Austyx does—not because he just merely read his textbooks, but because he went out of his way to understand the events of history. To him, history is a study of humanity and its nature, and to understand it is to gain the best possible understanding of mankind and its patterns.
“Some have asked what school I attended to achieve my level of knowledge. Yet in asking they misunderstand the source of my insight. One can go to any school they wish—what truly makes one wise is when they continue to learn afterwards.”-Austyx
Morality & Philosophy
Many outside the navy—along with a few inside of it—criticize Austyx's seemingly cold morals. He does, after all, lead a military and is bent on authoritarian control of the entirety of the Great Storm. Yet Austyx is, if anything, consistent. He places no inflated value on the life of any individual, nor does he dismiss the worth of life simply because those who hold it are of low standing. To him, the loss of life should be minimalized, and ideally should consist of those whom fail to benefit society (or at least those who do not do so in his eyes).
“Morality is simultaneously objective and subjective. Namely, it is subjective when many disagree with your views, and it is objective when they side with them. This observation is not of cold indifference nor of spite of society. It is merely a consistent observation of history.”-Austyx
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Desiring order within the seas, Austyx has dedicated his life to the establishment of a new government and military. He remains the Grand Admiral of the Black Iron Navy after establishing it nearly twenty-five years ago. Since its establishment, he has sought to gain control of all of the islands within the Great Storm. Having seen the chaos and destruction after Morgana's reign of terror, he believes that unity and strictly established order is paramount to the well-being of all of the Great Storm’s inhabitants.
“The is great power in having a singular purpose. Mine is to reconstruct order throughout the seas, and to ensure that order is strong enough to stand once my time is done. I have not wavered from this objective, and I shall not do so ere death.”-Austyx
Savvies & Ineptitudes
For as much wisdom and skill as Austyx holds, leadership is perhaps not the greatest suit for him. While he does not admit to it, he despises crowds and large social gatherings. He is a brilliant tactician, one who considers every angle to any situation, yet he leads by proven results and legendary skill more than by his actual ability to convince his troops through words. In truth, Austyx hates public speech, and to some extent fears it. Despite his attempts to improve and ration to himself why such a fear is unfounded, he cannot seem to truly overcome it. Instead, he often has Iron Admiral Metellus act as his orator. Milliard also frequently acts as Austyx's editor in this regard, as the latter's speeches tend to be dull recitations which drag for far too long to be motivating.
