The Grand League

The Guild of Adventurers and Explorers for Hire

Structure

A council of three elected guild members fulfill the executive functions of the Grand League.  It's current Leader is Grand Guildmaester Vrikdarok, a female minotaur and the League's youngest ever leader.  The Legends Keeper is a Dwarf named Tarri and the Keeper of Coins is the halfling, Oriel.  Decisions of the League are typically made by the Grand Guildmaester, although agreement inopposition from the Keeper of Coins and the Legends Keeper will overturn a decision by the Grand Guildmaester.

Public Agenda

The stated agenda of the Grand League is to provide support and shelter to members of the adventuring class.  As long as their dues are paid, and they remain in good standing, of course

History

The Grand League was formed during a period of population growth in Highport, with an influx of adventurers, wanderers and explorers swelling the residency of the town and creating a situation where several of the newcomers found themselves in need of two things - shelter and a job.  The original guildhall in Gloomwharf consisted of little more than a half dozen cots and a list of employment opportunities nailed to the door each morning.  The most rewarding and potentially dangerous jobs were seized upon by the strongest, and a pattern of hierarchy began to emerge which subsists to this day.  With the lack of a formal court system within Highport, justice is administered to the League's members by the Grand Guildmaester.  Some crimes are considered capital crimes, including: stealing from your own party member, embezzling party loot, betraying your party during a job and of course intraparty violence resulting in death deemed unjustified by the rest of the party (of course if one side of a split party is dead, who is left to bear witness to the violence being unjustified?).  Historically, only seven guild members have ever been executed.  In 301 the League moved from Gloomwharf to a complex within Thornwall Gate, where jobs are now posted daily on the noticeboard in the complex yard.  League members in good standing have first pick of the available work, with the dregs and menial work being left to those wishing to join or simply seeking work.  Fulfilling three contracts including one at least a day's travel from Highport makes one eligible to join the Grand League, with dues amounting to 10% of the annual treasure haul of the League members (with a minimum set amount based on other League members' earnings).  Failure to pay enough loses a member their good standing until the balance is restored.  Refusal or inability to redress the balance within three months will lead to expulsion from the League.
