Dead Star

Dead Stars are a mysterious and unexplained anomaly found throughout space. It occurs when a star suddenly shifts towards a dull, eerie red glow that basks the solar system in a red light.

Localized Phenomena

The light of a Dead Star bears mutagenic qualities; lifeforms caught within its rays begin to rapidly develop biological traits that are normally unfound in nature, along with psionic powers. Living within the Dead Star's light is not without risk, however. Those basking within the light of the Dead Star will inevitably succumb to a psychotic breakdown that leaves their minds drained of any thought save for basic functions -- and a growing hunger for Gleam.

Gleam

Gleam is a substance that forms when organic matter breaks down within the light of a Dead Star; it's a red, powdery resin that shimmers from the slightest light. Despite it being relatively easy to produce, the unique uses Gleam provides has lead to it being an invaluable asset. Much like the light that made it, Gleam also has negative effects on the psyche if consumed in large quantities, and can lead towards a complete psychological breakdown if handled incorrectly.
Gleam is primarily valuable due to the ability to grant psychic powers -- and its usage in the medical field. Despite the substance being dangerous to the psyche, the restorative properties it carries have rendered it an invaluable commodity.
