Letter to J.

This slightly yellowed letter has been written with a typewriter. It is neat, with no inkblots or obvious mistakes. It was found in an unmarked envelope, folded neatly.
My dearest J.   It gladdens my heart to hear that you have changed your mind in regard to my recent proposal. I know that you have long held our mutual acquaintance in the highest regard. I have no doubt that this has been a most difficult decision. Still, you and I have navigated the halls of power for long enough to know when certain changes need to be made. You have, again, my reassurance that there is no other course of action available. And believe me, I have searched long and hard. Alas, there is none.   Before events on the mainland get ahead of us, we shall need to act. We have a window of opportunity of three months, perhaps less. I am sure it does not need stating that I consider you an equal in all things, and cannot conceive even the notion of giving you directions. There is no ounce of doubt in my mind that there is any hidden place you could not find out about, no hidden servants you could not ferrett out, akin a foxhound scenting a quivering hare in its den. As such, I simply beg you to do as you do best. With all of that admirable focus available to you.   I suggest we confer in person at your earliest convenience. To dot the proverbial i's, cross our t's. I may require your assistance with a tangential matter or two. Nothing too onerous, but such things are best done sooner rather than later. I cannot bear to wait overlong to hear from you. I am sure you will not make me wait.   With deepest devotion,   C.
