With the Sundering, arcane magic came to the world, and mortals began to learn how to use it.

    The sundering of the Queen of Monsters created the first dragons, the first mortal arcane casters; and also warped the natural magics she'd shepherded, birthing the monsters.   This arcane magic did not include the school of necromancy, which was created much later, during the curse. At this point, the line between life and death was the purview solely of divine magic.

    With the discovery of and obsession with collecting gemstones, many dragons discovered that humanoids, especially Dwarves, were quite useful for extracting gemstones. Red Dragons and Blue Dragons especially made extensive use of humanoid slaves to mine rubies and sapphires and all kinds of precious gemstones.

    A group of Yuan-Ti sorcerers made deals with a Green Dragon to help them conquer an empire, in the process learning a great deal of magic which then spread to their enemies.
