Christmas

History

After Camp Hope was established, there was an effort by the founders to bring back some of the traditions that they observed before The Fall. Since the Time Before, Christmas has been a secular family holiday, marked by an elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role.

Execution

They continue with the long tradition of having a tree that is decorated. Most families decorate a tree outside their home as this is a more practicle option given that Christmas tree farms and plastic trees are no longer available. Decorating the trees of the public areas is a community event. Starting at the beginning of December, people will hang decorations in public area trees to being the celebration of the holiday. There isn't a tree decorating day. Instead, people just add to the decorations on te trees through out the month.

The tradition of gift giving continues. There is a focus on the children during this holiday. Santa Claus is said to come on Christmas Eve and brings gifts to all the good children in the camp. The gift opening on Christmas day is often the central holiday event.
