Manufacturing

The Ethirium Crystals are cleaned and cut by the dwarves of the Longbeard Clan. They are then transported to Rhynmouth. The import is regulated. Only licenced traders are allowed to import and deal in Ethirium. Every chrystal has to be registered.
The manufactoring of Ethirium powered items is quite complicated. The Chrystals have to be integrated into mechanical devices. These devices are inscribed by magical runes, which only magical gifted craftspeople can create.
Then a mage has to "awaken" the device to make it usable for non-magic users: Raw magical power is infused into the chrystal to act as a generator for the spell, that then is programmed into the runes. The runes control the magical power and channel it into the spell.

Social Impact

The possibility to create magical devices for non magial users had a huge impact on Rhynmouth society, positive, as well as negative.
Although it put more power into the hands of non magic users, and furthered some really big technological advancements, it really only benefited people wealthy enough to be able to afford this new technology. The schism between rich and poor widened. The concentration on the development of this new technology gave a huge advantage to the mages of the Silver Spire and also to magically gifted manufactorers, such as the Gnomes, to the detriment of old style craftspeople, mostly the dwarves and the humans.
All in all, it benefited Rhynmouth as a power within the Northern Kingdoms. Even though the Ethirium Force Technology is too expensive to use on a wide scale, such as with armies etc., it gave the Lady enough strategic advantage to feel secure in the position of the City.

Complexity

Only magical gifted persons and highly trained people can use Ethirium. Only mages, trained at the Silver Spire, know how to "awaken" an Ethirium powered magical construct.
To join the Ethirium crystals with the mechanical constructs is no less complicated and needs highly talented craftspeople.

Discovery

Leovin Dahvinik discovered the possibility of storing and channelling magic within Ethirium Chrystals about 20years ago.
