Junior administrator Xenia Harfolk is competent, smart, and sharp, but she finds it difficult to stand on her own in a world that only seems to notice magical prowess. She comes from a moderately wealthy and well known family. The Harfolks ran an export concern in Shorebend for decades before selling the business for a healthy profit, and now her parents enjoy a quiet retirement in Hollowsong Hills. Despite Xenia's efforts, she finds it difficult to step out of their shadow. Other people tend to dismiss her achievements as a product of her parents' connections. It doesn't help that Xenia shows neither interest nor aptitude for magic. In Vantam, anyone who won't learn magecraft is usually regarded as lazy or dumb. The accusations of nepotism and the choice to remain mundane means that Xenia often has to fight to be heard.

She has extensive connections with surface-side suppliers thanks to her parents' business.
