Riverfall

Riverfall is the southernmost city in the continent of Dashar, and on the southern coast of Fenlon. Riverfall is a coastal city, and has a large port bustling with commerce and fishing vessels. It's a city in the desert, but the Bantone River runs right by it, bringing trading and travelling vessels from Aliedell and Kish.

A Riverfall Council of Seven runs Riverfall, and they pay allegiance to Queen Yillana the Nineteenth who has a manor in the city but does not live there most of the time.

The city is heavily influenced, and some say run, by powerful guilds. There are guilds for everything. The Traders and Shippers guilds are by far the most powerful and involved in politics. The Wizards Guild is powerful, but not interested in the politics of the city.

Government

Run by a city council of 7 elected officials.  Although they are the official rulers, the guilds of the city often have more actual power in many places of the city, especially the Shipping guild.

Industry & Trade

Large fishing export.  Riverfall is a large center of trade for the eastern side of the content and the surrounding islands.

Infrastructure

Inns:

  • Old River Inn (decently nice inn)
  • Swines Bellows (seedy place)
  • Desert’s Rose (a mixed croud here) - Dena (Inn Keeper)
  • Starfish Last Hurrah (full of sailors)

Hospital De Boaro

  • Led by Melina and half-elven healer. She has no magical ability, but really was impressed by Noc when he spent a few days there helping out.
  • This is the only low-income hospital in the city and is in a poorer part of town.
  • No one here has any use of magic ability as those people tend to be paid quite a bit more and don't want to work for the hospital that takes so little money for their services.

Genieveve's Wizard College

  • Specialties Colleges of Evocation and Alteration
  • A 13 floor spire in the nice part of town
  • Lots of low level caster's here spending their parent's money
  • Run by a man named Conrad
  • Has a teleporation circle in it with a guarded room.
  • About 15 mid level casters there worth their salt

Guilds and Factions

Shipping Guild
  • Leader: Banoc (Deceased) - Elsa killed him after he set them up in an arena fight after taking them captive.  No new leader has been elected yet.
  • The shipping guild is the most protective of their territory and absolutely doesn't allow any ships to take trade in or out of the city without becoming part of the guild and paying dues or by paying a quite hefty tariff instead.  Almost all of the ship captains who have balked at this have gone missing at sea.  Captain Fishbane is a rare exception.
  • Fishing Guild falls underneath the shipping guilds power
  • Trading Guild technically doesn't answer to the shipping guild, but the shipping guild controls this guild for all practical purposes as almost all trading in this city is by boat.

  • Interactions:
  • The groups first interaction with the shipping guild was when they met with one of the local captains to charter a vessel.  They turned him down and hired Captain Fishbane instead, but Fishbane is not part of the guild and he's been a target of them for a while.
  • Later they learned after they were attacked by a sea hag that the hag and her people were in collusion with the shipping guild to take out or deter any ship not part of an elite group to pass west of the continent.
  • When the group returned from their trek to Gendi Tower and after defeating the dragon, they found that Captain Fishbane and his crew had been highjacked by the guild and were waiting for their return.  They took the group captive under the threat of death to the crew.
  • After breaking free and taking the guilds flagship for themselves they avoided Riverfall for a time.
  • The leader of the shipping guild traveled to their festival to offer a ransom to buy the ship back (the sailors way).  They made a deal to ransom it back for 15k gold.  Some veiled threats were made, but nothing egregious.
  • A of months later the group decided to start a rival shipping guild and seeded Captain Fishbane with some funds.  He's operating out of Crook Beech, who's guilds do not wield anywhere close to the same power as they do in Riverfall.  Soon after the group started noticing people watching them when they returned to Riverfall.
  • During a trip to Riverfall's Wizards College, the group were met by some toughs of the shipping guild.  They were met in force and 'asked' the group to meet Banoc for a discussion.  The group gave them the address of the assassins cult stronghold as the place to meet.
  • Once the group arrived there they were ambushed and 4 of them were put to sleep using a very powerful magic smoke bomb.  They awoke in an arena, were they were forced to fight for their lives.  Elsa turned into a giant eagle and grabbed Banoc, flew him high up in the air, and dropped him to his death.  After they defeated the arena's giant combatants they found the guild leaders no were to be seen.
Healers Guild (all people trained in medicine)
  • Leader: Jennreth Alude
Innkeepers Guild
  • For some reason their leader is kept a tight secret
Smith's Guild
  • Leader: Marie Craftwarren (Dwarf)
Assassins Guild
  • Leader: Haggar
  • Interactions:
  • Group killed a pocket of assassins that had become acolytes of Dar'angul
  • Made a deal with Haggar to kill the remained of the assassins that have turned to the cult and in return he'll send two of his people to watch Jarom
Masons Guild
  • Leader: 3 of the best contractors in the city are elected each year to form a collective leadership.
  • This guild has a wide prevue and overseas all construction in the city.  Architects, masons, and various craftspeople fall under this group
  Craftsmen Guild
  • Leader: None
  • The Craftsmen's guild is more of a loose association among different groups of specialized types of craftspeople like jewelry makers, furniture makers, weavers, candle makers, and various other craftspeople that don't fall under any other organization.  They are more of a guild in their hearts than in truth because they aren't organized enough in most cases to stop anyone from operating outside of the guild or to leverage their collective power to control pricing.
Mercenaries Guild
  • Leader: Shackai Storm Rider
  • Often referred to as the Fighters Guild too
  • This guild is mercs for hire, offering teams or individuals of all skill levels that leverage their physical or magical prowess to do your needed work.  Lots of local "adventurers" call this their home.
  • Unlike most other guilds in Riverfall there are a couple of other competing mercenary guilds in the city, but this one is by far the largest and for that reason can offer the most variety and best pricing.

Architecture

The building here are mostly made of stone, and the buildings nearer the ocean mostly have shingled sides to protect from the salty water in the air.   With a lot of streets covered in sand, the sand is often tracked inside buildings so stone floors dominate most of the architecture.    There is a larger section of the city that has pretty tall high rises of 6 or 7 stories.  Those are not the norm in the city though.  There are a few tall spires that seem to defy the natural layout of the city.
