Akane Shirogane

Rear Admiral Akane Shirogane (a.k.a. The Necromancer)

Premier environmental scientist, expert martial artist, SFGG Rear Admiral, and one hell of a mother. Akane Shirogane was not to be messed with. Born in Spirit, Mars in 2169, Shirogane grew up under the increasing rationing and watched the slow decline of Earth into unhabitability. As a result, as soon as she was old enough she enlisted in the SFGG, with the intention of looking for ways to help fix Earth. Under its education program, she received a bachelors in environmental engineering and a doctorate in climatology from the Curiosity Institute of Technology. Admiral Tori Rosach recognized her abilities and fast-tracked her to a position within SFGG where she could do the most good, and gave her her own project: Project Necromancer. Under her guidance, Project Necromancer flourished, making vast strides in fixing Earth's ecosystem and leaping terraforming technology forward hundreds of years. Unfortunately, it wasn't to last, as Shirogane died in a freak car accident in 2218. She was survived by her two children, Takashi and Keith Shirogane.

Personal history

Akane was born an only child to Hinata and Ryuji Shirogane in 2169. She grew up in Spirit on Mars until she was 18, at which point she enlisted in the Mars branch of the SFGG. Her father was not happy with this decision, but she explained to him her reasoning: she'd seen the suffering that the destruction of Earth's ecosystem had brought, and SFGG was her best shot at helping fix it.   She graduated almost the top in her class from CIT with a degree in environmental engineering and a doctorate in climatology, despite a few trials with misogynistic professors. One of the higher-ups, Admiral Tori Rosach, noticed her affinity for the environment and her radical final thesis: the possibility of terraforming Earth back. They pulled Akane onto a special project they headed, focusing on how to reverse the damage to Earth's ecosystem.   About the same time, Akane met Ryūshi Hakamada. They had a whirlwind relationship that ended with Ryūshi walking out on her only two months before their son, Takashi Shirogane, was born. Akane decided she was better off without Ryūshi but kept Takashi with her. She raised Takashi as best she could while also leading the effort to reform Earth. Minor problems arose when Takashi was diagnosed with Becker muscular dystrophy in his early teens, but a year-long sabbatical and some of the best doctors recommended by her parents got both of them back on their feet.   Not everyone was happy with her efforts. The Éskhayklos came to power about the same time her efforts took off. They were disgusted with the technological leaps she and her team took for the benefit of Earth, thinking it better if Mother Nature healed on her own, without human help. They began nicknaming her 'The Necromancer.' Akane thought this was absolutely hilarious, and named her terraforming project Project Necromancer.   In 2212, Takashi brought home a kid he'd found sitting distressed in the desert surrounding the base: Keith. Concerned, Akane figured out the problem with his current foster home and decided to adopt him herself. It took several months and a lot of hard work, but Keith eventually accepted her as a mother figure, which was far more than any foster home had ever managed to get. Akane's parents both died the next year, Ryuji from cancer and Hinata from an infection that transformed into sepsis.   Akane and her children lived in peace for the next few years, both children getting accepted to SFGG's piloting program at Levett Base. Then, in 2218, Akane was killed in a freak car accident. Without her, Project Necromancer started to falter, and the Éskhayklos gained the upper hand. She was honored with a state funeral hosted in Levett Base.

Education

Akane graduated almost the top in her class from CIT with a degree in environmental engineering and a doctorate in climatology. Akane was also an accomplished martial artist. She had been training since she was ten in Shaolin Chuan-Fa, and occasionally when looking for a break helped out in hand-to-hand combat training. She passed this on to Takashi as soon as he was capable of kicking on command and later helped Keith refine the techniques he already knew.

Employment

Akane started as a simple SFGG Lieutenant in the science division, but her work was quickly singled out by Tori Rosach and she was fast-tracked through the promotion ladder. Rosach also gave her command of Project Necromancer, which she headed until she died.

Taboos

Akane refused to talk about Ryushi beyond a few sentences, even to her children.
