The Torlan Hammers

Since their arrival on Somnium Reach, the Torlan Hammers have earned a reputation as effective, if not brutal, soldiers. The war was undeniably pulled back from the jaws of defeat by their arrival, but the regiments predilection towards all out assaults has lead to massive losses in ammunition and civilians in equal measure.
Even now, the efficacy of the Torlan Hammers in the war effort is a highly debated topic. While their methods are effective, their capabilities are best described as an angry grox loose in a church; destructive, aggressive and difficult to keep control over. This battle doctrine has lead many to blame some of the wars major losses on the actions of the Torlans.

Seeing Red

The reason that the Torlan Hammers act in this way is due to the controversial use of Frenzon Dispensers within all of their troops, inducing a deep hatred towards any enemy they are pointed at. These Frenzon Dispensers are controlled by the regiments commissars and sergeants, with dispensers implanted within all troops, including operators.
The double edged implant means that Torlan soldiers will never retreat from a foe and they will go to lengths beyond any other soldier to get the job done, but at the cost of anything in their way. Granting hyper-aggressive soldiers use of heavy ordinance and tanks leads to exactly what you would expect.
In the months following the war, the newly instated planetary governor had put out an order to cut the regiments supply of Frenzon against the regimental commanders wishes, this lasted for only a single week before the entire Torlan presence on Somnium Reach threatened to withdraw their aid, and with this, use of the drug was reinstated. In this short time however, the Torlan forces on the ground went through significant issues with withdraw.
By the time the drug was returned to the Torlans, a number of soldiers had ended their own lives while more still had attempted to buy the drug from local sources. During this time of upheaval a number of Torlan forces also went missing, with three commissars having been killed in what many suspect was an attempt to escape their lives of drug-hazed fury.

Training and Tactics

On their homeworld of Torla, guardsmen are selected for their roles via a caste system. Those born into the Star caste are expected to join the Torlan Hammers, after thirty years of service they are permitted to return home, upon which they are hidden away from the world for another year for "The Great Re-Learning".
Once someone is born into the Star caste they are trained from an early age in the operations of vehicles and basic combat, they also begin to receive small doses of Frenzon to allow their systems to adapt and to allow the local Administratum to analyse both their compatibility and natural resistance to the combat drug.
Those who are resilient to the drugs effects are moved into roles to assist the planets armoured regiments, while those who are receptive to the drug are moved into the heavy infantry squads.
