High Vampire
There is little so dangerous or insidious as the High Vampires.
Perfect predators, they are often utterly indistinguishable from your average human. They even confound both occult and magical means of detection. They blend into society, often holding positions of power and wealth, while keeping out of the public eye. The only test that has actually proven effective is a surgery that peels away the flesh of the lips and gums, as well as the bone of the maxilla, to reveal the vampire's fangs. Of course, with the invasiveness of the procedure. it is not really feasible to do unless you are absolutely sure in the first place.
As it stands, the only reliable way to detect a High Vampire is to wait for bodies to start piling up without the usual reports of a Low Vampire. Not a perfect system, to be sure.
Their abilities assist in their infiltration as well and provide a wide range of boons depending on the bloodline of the Vampire in question. Most vampires are able to impart a form of hypnosis on unsuspecting individuals. Luckily, if one knows about this ability it is usually rendered impotent. They are also faster than humans, to the point that the human eye struggles to keep up with their motion. It might be of little solace, but they are not much stronger than the average man.
Other abilities of vampires are recorded to include:
- Inflicting temporary or permanent madness on subjects
- Thralldom
- Invisibility
- Transforming into both mist and animals (most commonly bats, crows, and canine)
- The healing of most wounds not to the head or heart
- Manipulation of blood
- Magics totally unique to vampires, but too numerous to list
Basic Information
Anatomy
Identical to human, bar two points. The most obvious being the set of fangs that retract into the upper gums so as disguise themselves as regular human canines. The other being a total lack of an appendix or anything analogous.
Genetics and Reproduction
Most accurately described as a 'Necrophage', High Vampires can propagate their kind through humanity. A process they call an "embrace". By giving back some of their own blood just as they drain a victim of theirs, their unfortunate victim is transformed into one of their number.
Growth Rate & Stages
Popular to contrary belief, Vampires do not stop aging. Though, functionally, popular belief is correct. They age so slowly that they might of well have stopped.
Ecology and Habitats
The image of a vampire in a far castle is one that has held the public mind since Stoker released his book the year before the Grand Reveal. It is a bit of a misnomer, however, as being at such a distance would put a High Vampire would but the creature at a regular disadvantage.
They much prefer to be within urban centers. Plenty of crowds to blend in with, high life to enjoy, and food within easy reach.
Biological Cycle
As mentioned previously, the High Vampires are not ageless. They do age, though at a rate so slow it is practically going nowhere. Not to mention that they can actively work against their own age progression through their feeding.
Additional Information
Social Structure
There is a sort of 'secret' structure around their species. complicated histories, rituals, traditions, and ranks privy only to their kind.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Sight and hearing several magnitudes greater than humans. Often able to see up to the horizon with clarity, as well as hear a pin drop on the other side of a fortress.
Editor's note
There is no limit to how much blood a vampire can drink, as far as has been discovered. They do not get full. They do, however, get hungry. The frequency of their feedings varies with their age, with older vampires requiring more frequent feedings.
The only thing that ties High Vampires to Low Vampires is their crimson diets. There is no evidence linking the two together as some sort of cousins or ancestors.
Scientific Name
vespertilio pseudo-vir

Technically indefinite
Average Physique
High Vampires are not overly strong, only slightly above human.
