The Laws of Dark Ages
Folk magic, druidical in nature, has ensured a world of more bountiful harvests and hence less starvation and hardship, than the actual world of the 8th century. Hygiene is better, the water quality is better, and farming is on par with that of the 17th-18th centuries. Population is higher as well, although it is kept in check by the dangers of the wilderness.
