Whirlpool of the High Seas
In the middle of the three main continents, there is a large whirlpool, deeper than most caverns known to man. This whirlpool is known to suck up anything that gets too close, and those things are never seen again. No-one knows where it comes from, where it leads too or why it exists. If anyone knew the answers to these questions, they never returned to the surface to explain to anyone else. It is a source of fear and controversy for many people, and has spawned many theories that are still debated in this day and age.
At first glance, it doesn't look like an ordinary whirlpool. The whirlpool is actually a circle of waterfalls, with water flowing at high speeds. In the middle, there is a gaping hole where the streams start to twirl as they reach the bottom. The first few metres of the gap are visible, but after a certain point, nothing can be seen. This point is often called the "no-contact zone". Once a person, animal or boat falls past this point, they are quickly swallowed by the gaping chasm and gone forever.
Beliefs & Theories
"There is always a bit of truth in every story. And don't let anyone tell you different."
The Beast of the High Seas
Many people think the whirlpool is actually the mouth of an ancient creature, one who is seemingly very hungry. There are many disagreements on what the beast actually is, and the conversation is still ongoing. Before the Age of Triumph, it was widely thought that the Hydro Dragon was the creature residing in the waters. But when the Dragon revealed itself to the world, that theory was quickly discarded. Now, many people think it is the mouth of a sea snake, who terrorises the west of the Known World. But very few are brave enough to ask the real question: if the whirlpool is the snake's mouth, where is are its teeth? And does the beast ever sleep? The Spirit Portal
Another popular theory is that the whirlpool is a portal to the Spirit World. In fact, many adherents to this theory would go as far to say that it is a link to other worlds beyond Dankar. What these other worlds are, they cannot say. But they are committed to exploring the whirlpool for answers and looking beyond the sky for inspiration. One question often asked about the Spirit Portal theory is whether beings from other worlds can enter Dankar, if one can leave this world. Unfortunately, adherents are widely derided as cranks in academic circles, and their theories dismissed by most people, who'd rather turn the other way. It is harder to debate these people, as their theories are deemed "unscientific" and even hearing their theories in some quarters amounts to heresy.Punishment from the Sentinels
Adherents to the Guardians of the Realms believe Sentinel Nadja and Sentinel Eliyas wanted to punish the world for their lack of care for the environment. They see the whirlpool as vindication for their beliefs and worldview. Ironically, the two people who have caused more damage to the environment are the Sentinels Nadja and Eliyas.
