Long-distance Communication

Communicating over a long distance has always been difficult for dali.   The first and still most widely used method of it is via a Courier that carries your (often times sealed) letter from one place to another. A Courier's fee is cheap, and they definitely will find where to deliver your letter, but this particular method has quite a few things to consider:
  • Reliability - a Courier is still a civilian. Traveling over long distances is no safe task, and it is quite often that they are not only stopped at borders for long amount of times, but also could be robbed or killed along the way. A letter given to a Courier does not always arrive, and even when it does, it may have been unsealed or read along the way.
  • Secrecy - Soldiers or Guards often accuse Couriers of being Spies (especially during times of war, or when moving between borders with rivals) and may request to unseal their letter in order to inspect its content. Also, due to the generally low payment these Couriers often work with Information Brokers and open the letters themselves to provide the information in exchange for Danar.
  • Time - especially when sending over distances without a safe, walkable road a Courier might have to wait an indefinite amount of time to find passage on a Ship, especially one that would be worth the coin of delivering the letter. Nobles often pay extra for this exact reason.
The second method of long-distance communication is using Ravens. Certain Ravens are trained to fly between specific settlements when given a Danar. However, when sending a letter to a specific place certain nobility might consider purchasing Spell Scrolls that allow them to speak to them directly. A scroll of speak with animals often times costs around 120 Danars, so it's quite a steep increase in cost compared to using a simple, trained Raven. Of course the ones working with the Ravens also offer to instruct the birds themselves, provided one pays an extra charge for it.
  • Reliability - due to flight a Raven's relatively reliable to be able to get to any place. The only dangers to think of are flying predators, flying monsters, and possibly Rangers hunting small game. There's also a chance someone might intentionally hunt Ravens that carry letters to sell to Information Brokers.
  • Secrecy - Ravens do not open letters, the most secret (not hand-delivered) letters are sent via Ravens, hence why some might pay for others to shoot them down if looking for a specific scoop.
  • Time - they are generally quick to get to their destination.
