Dwarvish Oath
In Dwarf societies the Lords of the holds were required to take or carry over an oath of loyalty on each election of a High Dwarf. Those that took the oath to someone other than the High Dwarf were the only one legally allowed to rebel against them. The Dwarvish Oath was, and still is taken very seriously in the societies that use them, and breaking it is the highest form of treason.
The oath lasts until the death of those one swears it to. Which means that whoever did not support the last election would still have their old oath, while the ones that supported the previous High Dwarf could now decide anew.
History
The Dwarvish Oath is one of the most ancient tradition of Dwarves which goes back to the foundations of the Empire of Dwarovar.
