Session 7 - Chasing their Dreams Report
General Summary
Bemoans' time scouting the old home was worthwhile, and he felt a new resolve as he started following one of the creatures that departed from Greyon’s home in the middle of the night. Meanwhile Hester flew back frantically with all possible haste to gather the rest of the group. The first few minutes felt tense and with his fixed, primal attention focused on hunting his prey, he left few clues to indicate where he'd traversed. Intent on keeping his distance while following the haunting figure as closely as he could, he tracked it soundlessly leaping across the rooftops. Only thanks to Bemoans' keen eyes was he able to spot where this creature had moved, before it yet again leaped out of view and our Leonin was forced to scramble down and back up to try and spot the next rooftop to progress to.
After a few minutes of tracking, stalking, and moving as silently as he could and leaving marks or tracks when possible, Bemoans loses sight of the creature after an open window shutter cracks during his scramble up to the roof. The shutter clatters to the ground, and as he summits the roof, he panics - the creature is nowhere to be seen. He recalls the direction it had been traveling, where it last went, and the few rooftops it could have lept to, and in mere seconds he too has lept to the new rooftop. He notices a few panicked scratches where the creature must have landed – confirming he was on the right track. Desperate to pick up the trail, with his hunter's instinct commanding his movements, Bemoans takes a deep breath and allows the bestial side of him to surface. Adrenaline pumping and eyes dilated wide, he catches a glimpse of movement nearly 50 feet away on an otherwise still scene of scattered rooftops. His senses follow a movement from the edge of the roofline trailing down the far wall out of view. Voices and lights start to ignite behind him from the commotion, and Bemoans knows the only other thing that could have been up here was his quarry... Dashing to the place where he saw the flash of movement he arrives seconds later and climbs down the roof, into the street where the creature must have escaped to... only to find nothing there.
Scanning his surroundings he sees a few doors along the road, a singular open window just below the roof line where an older gentleman fell asleep reading in his study... but no creature. The barrels and carts he passes aren't large enough to hide behind, and after searching the street he turns his attention to other adjacent roofs. He continues along the same path and trajectory to see if any more tracks were left to pick up the trail, but without any solid path after a half hour of searching, he decides to return to the last place he spotted it and await for his teammates. As his instincts calm and settle, adrenaline dissipates from his system, and the exhaustion starts to hit. Catching his breath, he fully realizes the energy he has spent through the night in hunting his elusive mystery villain.
The group was awoken a little after midnight by Hester, desperately catching her breath and warning Luce that something had gone wrong. She exclaimed that Bemoans was on his own, tracking a horrible monster with teeth and gross, pale skin. In a matter of moments, the rest of the party was alert and ready to leave. They collected near Greyon’s home and started slowly moving northward. Without a clear trail, it was slow tracking at first. Morrigan and Luce took to the rooftops, looking for clues and guiding the remainder of their party on the ground. Upon finding the broken window shutter, the voices, and the lights, these signs indicated that Bemoans’ tracking of the creature had turned into a full-on chase giving the party an indisputable lead. Just around 1 am, the group finally came upon the exhausted Leonin. They took their time to search the area thoroughly with no success. Beyond the edge of the roofline, it may as well have disappeared. Just as the party turned to leave the street, Lynx felt the hair on his neck stand on end. He felt the eyes of something horrible watching him, and terror seeped into his mind. Quickly turning around - only to find the road was exactly how it was moments before -undisturbed, save for the minor disturbances they had made during the search. Nonetheless, he couldn't shake this dreadful feeling of eyes tracking him...
Of feeling hunted. The party, no fool to the apparent nightmares that haunt this town at night, expressed their concern for this sudden shift in behavior. But Lynx was adamant and just wanted to leave - now. Talk could wait until after they returned to a safer, more protected space. Morrigan disappeared to the rooftops once again, quieter than a thought as she surveilled from the rooftops - and psychically linked to her peers for safety. Luce and Bemoans climbed to the roof on the opposite side of the road, leaving Darian to protect Lynx as he slowly shook off these unwelcome emotions and collected his thoughts for later discussion. It was then the creature attacked! That same dreadful fear that plagued Lynx crept into Darian and Bemoans as well, and simultaneously the voices of Luce and Bemoans were cut short - silenced as the creature assailed them. Within seconds, Bemoans had been critically wounded by the creature's wide, toothy maw that made up its torso, and he lay unconscious on the roof with the creature standing over him - surveilling the remaining prey. Lynx deftly dispelled the silenced aura - with Luce able to irk out but a few panicked cursed words before the silence returned. Darian summoned his Echo, Varian, to the rooftop - always eager and never afraid, ready to fight and punish the foe that harmed his newfound friends. Morrigan threw painful, crafted thoughts as daggers toward the enemy. Noticing when they held no effect at all, she switched to more heavy and clumsy steel. Only afterward did she realize her voice, too, had been snatched from her very throat, even despite her attempts to distance herself and gain more ground. Before it was too late, Luce straddled the bleeding-out Leonin and saved him none too soon with one of their precious Health Potions. Bemoans came to, sore but alive, and watched as the rest of the group slowly surrounded and cornered this monster. As the creature's presence became a heavy pressure inside the skulls of those closest to it, foreign thoughts invaded their minds with shrills and screeches. The chaos stole their wills to move and act, drowned their very impulses – yet still they fought fiercely. The creature was on its last legs, bloody and wounded when a white-hot, piercing tone rang between our hero's ears, reverberating through their very bones and stunning them in place clutching their heads. In a last-ditch effort to escape, it vanished into the sewer grate - the very skin and bones that made up its form folding and twisting in the darkness to make its way through the small gaps. Slowly shaking off the noise, and their wounds feeling heavy, the survivors delved and blinked into the underground to try and stop the retreat - only to find a maze of crap and corridors, with not a trace of which direction or what goal the creature now had. After a moment of exploration, and a resolve to take this fight as a draw, they regrouped underground and began finding their way through the cobbled sewers in the direction of Greyon's neighborhood. Better to live and build more intel, than die chasing it while so many were wounded. Still - they trekked back towards familiar under-ground, leaving only Morrigan on the streets above. She was headed to Sig and Nieve to request their aid and alert them of the incident.
Surely nothing bad happens to the one who's left alone in the night... Right?
