Demonic Classification

Demons are always given two groups to belong to. The first describes it's general threat type and the second describes it's abilities.

First Typing

  • Infectious is one of the most dangerous class of demons. It describes a creature that can infect a human being with a new demonic possession or with a controlled state similar thereto. The most common example is the Zombie.
  • Support demons either enhance other supernatural creatures or create opportunities for new kinds of demons to infect a victim. This is different than an Infectious type by sheer threat level. An Infectious demon nearly always spreads it's affliction, whereas a Support demon only sometimes invites a completely different breed of monster into a victim. Gourd Fiends are a common Support demon.
  • Tracker type demons are used by more powerful monsters to find a specific kind of human prey. Trackers are not always dangerous, in fact they often are incapable of harming their quarry, but they almost always herald the arrival of something much worse. Unicorns, for instance, are often employed by The Twisted to gather virgins for blood rituals.
  • Psychosadistic demons torment their human victims through fear or psychological torture. They do this either to feed on negative emotions or it is just so entertaining to them that they prioritize this over simple killing. A noteworthy example is the House Horror.
  • Insidious type demons are extremely capable of passing themselves off as human. They do not look physically different than their human host, and generally only possess supernatural capabilities rather than physical ones. A notorious example is the Gremlin, an Insidious Technofiend.
  • Territorial type demons are non-infectious demons that specifically do not feed exclusively on humans. Territorial demons are named as such because each marks out a territory that it does not leave, and generally only interacts with human beings when they violate this territory. The sasquatch, for instance, appears only interested in defending it's territory, making it a Territorial demon as it lacks infectious capabilities and does not seem to prey on humans.
  • Calamitous type demons are forces of nature that only destroy in a seemingly random pattern. They do not seem to be able to be communicated with and their patterns are unpredictable. They do not target humans on purpose.
  • Memetic type demons are information hazards, they feed or kill simply by knowledge of them spreading. All research institutions, including the TCRD, have banned research into memetic demons.

Second Typing

  • Puppeteer class demons can only possess non-human, non-animal objects. Again, the zombie is the most common example of this, as a zombie ghost can only possess a corpse. A Gourd Fiend can only possess a gourd.
  • Zoomorph class demons are also known as Lycanthropes. They are primarily human in appearance and behavior until a specific circumstance forces them to transform into a man-beast hybrid, such as the appearance of the full moon in the case of Werewolves.
  • Familiar class demons are only able to alter a specific animal in the process of possession. Unlike a human, an animal can never be freed from possession, as familiars do not manifest a weak point growth. Familiars are usually, but not always, associated with a different, more powerful demon. Tracker-Familiar is the most common kind of demonic pairing.
  • Technofiend class demons either interfere with or consume technology. Powerful Technofiends cause communications devices to stop working simply by being near them. Previously believed to be a luck-based ability.
  • Predator class demons require humans as prey objects in order to survive. They eat human flesh, blood, or organs. A demon that feeds on emotion or energy is generally not considered a Predator class. The most noteworthy example of a Predator class demon is the Vampire.
  • Hive class demons repurpose a human body to serve as a home for another life form, usually insects or other demons.
  • Warrior class demons are monsters capable of thought and communication, and serve as Hell's military organizers. They are most commonly psychosadistic or support demons.
