Shunu of the Breath Character in Cycles of Infinity | World Anvil

Shunu of the Breath

The silent goddess of hushes and whispers, Shunu is believed to seek out the lost and forgotten. She travels the world with a benign curiosity, but leaves no trace of her appearance. To those that don't know her, she may be believed to be gone from the world, still others have seen her but may confuse her for Anyalao, with both taking a wispy forms as they travel the world. Though similar in many ways, Shunu is not Anyalo. While one seeks novelty, the other craves secrets. It is believed that the fragments of knowledge Oroval has forgotten, Shunu still holds.

Description

As a goddess of secrets and whispers, Shunu is often worshiped by those that seek to know things that are lost, forgotten, hidden, or somehow just out of reach. While she doesn't necessarily seek to discover new things, often she will help those that are trying to make their discoveries by unlocking within them the things they already know deep inside.   Though not well known by laymen, and even the clergy of the embodied in many ways, she isn't an all together forgotten god. She hides away in the dark parts of the world, looking for that which doesn't want to be discovered. She readily seeps through the dreams of mortals to see their desires, moves through the cracks of sealed rooms, and dives into the farthest, most remote areas of the cosmos to see what they hold.   Shunu actively participates with her most devout followers, but she operates on a reciprocal relationship with her followers. As even she, as a god, cannot be in all places at all times, her followers are often spies that operate on her behalf to gather information for her, allowing her to pull from their minds what she doesn't know. Her followers make a wide spider-web of individual groups and persons.

Personality

It's hard to say exactly how Shunu truly is, as her followers are really the only ones that interact with her. The few accounts that describer her, did so at great peril. They describe her as a sweet seductress, cold in tone but warm in promise. To those that seek her, expect this form of affection.

Relationships

Shunu holds no relationship with any of the immortal beings. All seem to bear a strong dislike towards her ability to infiltrate their realms and see into their darkest desires and plans. Orovahl in particular hates Shunu for hoarding secrets from him, but without being able to find her and imprison her, he will never fully embrace the secrets that she hold.

Realm

Rumors exist of where Shunu stores her secrets, but these are rumors alone. Some say that she makes her home in a forgotten hall of Dadadaf, while others claim she has found a crack at the edge of the cosmos and resides beyond there. Whatever the truth, even her most devout do not know.

Shrines and Temples

Unlike other shrines, Shunu's is a hanging placard. Inside is carved a symbol face. One eye is shut, one eye is open. In place of a mouth, is a symbol key. Most are highly minimal. Occasionally, a symbol is used in place of the traditional shrine, though this symbol constantly changes through the ages.
Though Shunu has a shrine in every embodied temple, often they are covered in dust and forgotten about. This is as well what she and her followers want. True temples to Shunu are tiny, usually only the shrine themselves, and hidden away in dark recesses, often acting as safe havens for the clergy that worships there. If one stumbles on a temple of Shunu, it is often viewed as a fatalistic occurrence. Once this secret is discovered, the person is bound to Shunu.

Clergy

The only true clergy for Shunu is her servant-worshipers, who operate in a clandestine fashion. They exist without the greater world knowing, and operate in extreme secrecy. Their exact nature is secretive, and if they operate as more than information-gatherers for Shunu, is impossible to tell. If their vast network was able to be used to shape the world though, it is believed that no part of it would go untouched.

The Embodied

Shunu will very rarely embody others. When she does, it is often more out of a strong desire of her's to learn and an inability of her follower to get the information she craves. Tools will sometimes be embodied for her followers, if they are woefully lacking in a particular area but are otherwise compentent, but these tools are highly guarded and are essentially lost to the greater world.   Artifacts
Items that Shunu embodies are often very particular in nature. Skeleton Keys, of sorts, are believed to be prime examples of items that Shunu has embodied, but other objects include scrying glasses, mind-reading devices, and other tools of trade that would be useful to spies and scouts. Though she has helped exploerers and scholars as well, it is assumed that their tools have been taken at their death, leaving no trace of her help with them.   Persons
Individuals embodied by Shunu will slowly wither to spirits, haunting halls and listening to it's inhabitants for her alone. In this regard, accepting to be embodied by Shunu is a sentence to truly fade from the world and become nothing but a shadow passing over it.

Servants

If Shunu has active non-clergy servants, it's not known. Much like her mythical home, any servants he has are simply whispers and thought-experiments on what she would have.

Worship in Setting

Many people give lip-service to Shunu during moments that they strongly desire to discover a hidden secret, but true worship of Shunu is often done in total isolation, or with a few key individuals that are like-minded. Open praise to Shunu is only every really done by her explorer and scholarly worshipers, seeking to uncover the buried truth, but often even they will go to other gods first, with only a passing prayer to Shunu. A true devotee to Shunu would hold her symbol close to them and only worship her in private.   D&D 5e
Intervention
Shunu intervenes Very Rarely, at a rate of 5%. When she does, it is Moderate.   Shunu will step in for her favored when they need assistance, but only when she finds that she can gain something from it. If help is given but a price is not demanded, it should be understood that you are either doing her work already, or she will be returning soon for a task. In most instances, she will make a demand before giving her assistance. When she does, it's often a mild interference, something that may not be noticed by others in the moment.   Influence
Shunu's shrines give a mild influence off when she is present. Worshipers will need to be right next to the shrine, almost touching, to feel her gentle whispers and guidance. Those that are in her influence will need to make a Wisdom Save DC 5 to overcome her words. the PC may choose to fail in order to listen. In doing so, they will be told of some great mystery they have the ability to discover, and will speak of it to them, giving them a strong desire to discover it for themselves.   Path to Embodiment
Desiring to be embodied by Shunu is unusual, but not impossible. Generally, the embodied are her followers that fail to meet her expectations, but desire to please her. They exchange their forms for her embodiment, granting them the abilities to seep through walls and see the hidden in the world. Their embodiment will cause their forms to fade, and the weakest willed ones will lose their minds as well, fading into nothing more than an instinctual force that moves through the world, forgotten even by her. Those that wish to be embodied often do so for the chance of discovering a secret so well hidden, that they alone will know the truth beyond the walls it is hidden behind.
