Human Species in Cycles of Infinity | World Anvil

Human

Versatile, adapable, and numerous

Some believe that the humans were created first, by the embodied gods, as they tried to figure out how to make sentient life. That is why they are so varied, so diverse. They adapt so easy, can live nearly anywhere, eat anything, and favor nothing in particular over anything else. Once the gods knew what they were doing, it is said, they went on to create the other Origin Races.
— Accumulated Lore of The Ages by Sinsorious Shakadai
The first race created by the Embodied Gods, humans have existed in every Cycle since the Divinity Cycle. They are generally the first to spread across the globe after any given cycle, and will quickly begin squabbling for dominance against all beings and nature itself. While appreciative of the lore and power in the previous cycles, human cultures have rarely made it a point of interest to specifically search out these often far lost treasures.   Moderately well lived compared to some of the races, humans exert a flexible form of thinking that allows them to progress with astonishing speed. This ability to both progress and remain stable is often sought out by racial kingdoms struggling to find their own balance when their lifespans cause trouble. It isn't uncommon for a human to be among the highest ranking engineers in an elven community loathe to adapt to changes in nature or to see a human sitting in the council seats for the annurin to keep radical changes from rocking their nations.   A balanced, abundant, jack-of-trades race; humans are the assumed race of any unidentified person in the wild. True to form, when an unfortunate skeleton is unearthed in the lost ruins of a deep forest, it is often a human adventurer who had fallen prey to a dark force.

History

Humans were the first race created by the embodied gods, though perhaps not the first race to have ever existed. Their forms were initially created to serve as a blueprint of sorts for other, more specialized, intelligent races. When the form was true to the god's desires, they propagated them across their dominion, having them serve as general servants for all manner of work.   There is precious little that the gods have shared of the first of mankind, or indeed any of the races, and no records have survived the first cycles ending. It would seem, however, that the Embodied Gods first created mankind to help wage their war on the Guardians where they could not operate.   Divinity Cycyle
Created during this cycle, humans existed wherever the embodied gods wanted a presence. Often these strongholds were weakly held against continuous sieges. They helped shape and cultivate the lands in the visions of the various Embodied that held more direct control over them, but most importantlly, acted as the bulk of the divine armies that fought against the lowest order of Guardians.

As the centuries wore on and the divines realized they could not directly beat one another, the humans still acted as servants to the various powerful forces that divided the first Cycle of the world, unable to exercise true free will.   Commonality
Common - Humans are found in all Embodied God controlled regions, wild regions, and uncommonly in Guardian controlled regions.
  Oblivion Cycle
When the divines ended their total war and settled into tense peace and skirmishes, the various races began to feel the true burden of the direct control of the divine rulers. The first age started with humanity at its best under the lead of Alexor-of-all-Men. His rebellion against all the divines set this cycle to be one of mortality only.

For the rest of the cycle, humanity was ever present, making up the bulk of the realms around the world, only falling in dominance during "The Great Enrith Age".   Commonality
All Ages: Common - The most abundant race by far in all the ages. Found in all regions equally. Great Enrithee Age: Common - No longer the most abundant, but still well represented. Humans were mostly under various forms of slavery within Enrithee dominion, and very common among all free regions not controlled by the empire.
  Crown Cycle
Rising up to take the place of the Enrithee from the previous cycle, humanity started the first age of the new cycle with dominance. Though the other races remained, it was humanity that ruled through their various nations and kingdoms by virtue of their sheer numbers.

Some remote regions of the world had areas of low or no human populations, but even here, humans were generally known about.   Dawning Age: Common - Most common. With a few exceptions, dominant in all major areas.

Variations

Humans come in a large variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. In each region, various ethnicities may rise up, but no with the end of an age, they collapse down, survivors intermingling, and eventually new ethnicities grow.
Interspecies
Due largely to their very flexible biology, humans can have offspring with most biological species that exist. The children will often favor their mother's species, but this is a generalization, not a rule.

Playing a Human

Humans can generally have any type of background imaginable without needing much justification. They are present in all locations and will even emerge from points in the past from cataclysms and shelters from the end of ages and cycles. As the most prolific race in the cosmos, humans can often be chosen for cultural exceptions, as even within an ethno-state, humans would likely be present to some degree, even if persecuted.   Magical Manifestation Humans do not normally express magical powers without extensive learning, but it occurs often enough that most people from cities will at least be familiar with one or two humans that naturally possess magical gifts.  Though these gifts are sometimes surpressed or never fully developed, most will teach themselves, at the very least, how to control the talent.   Divine Manifestations As an Origin Race, they are more likely to be contacted and imbued with powers by the Embodied gods than other gods, but generally are favored by all the gods as instruments of divine agency. Most Korakiad , or god-touched, are human in origin.   Nature Manifestations The malleable, soft nature of human's design have made them more easily manipulated by ambient energies of the cosmos. As such, Genasi and humans with a penchant for nature magic are common. Humans who live within a couple miles of gates to other planes will often see the first generation born there experiencing some nature-imbued changes to them, even if subtle.
