The Knights of St John

The Knights of St John - also known as the Knights Hospitalier - are descended from the original knights templar, who themselves were good Samaritans focussed on protecting the travellers on the road to Jerusalem during Hajs and Pilgrimages in the 10th to 13th centuries.
By the 21st century, the knights of St John had become more of a gentleman's leisure club and charity than a true religious order.
During the havoc of the rising seas, Malta and the ensuing conflicts, Malta continued to be an important strategic location, and when Malta was invaded, the Knights of St John were repressed by the Franco-Spanish block.
When Malta itself crumbled into the sea during an earthquake, the knights were forced into China-controlled Africa, where they took to quad-bikes (usually two to a bike, as in the old legend) to enable them to move around the rough African terrain (and also flee the intensely hungry African wildlife).
During the Russo-Chinese war, the Knights Hospitalier acted as first responders and line of defence paramedics, shifting to their historical modus operandi of protecting those who fell foul of abusers of power, mainly civilians. This, of course, was the time of the first Apocalyptic signs, and the appearance of demons in our world - the first apocalyptic
During this Rise of the Apocalypse, an Aasimar named John Lightfield found the knights of St John and reawakened them to the lost truth - demons were real, and the Apocalypse really was here. With the veil dropped to them, the Knights once more entered the supernatural fight against the realms of the damned. No longer merely on the side of the oppressed against the oppressor, they became on the side of the humans against the divine threat.
When Twilight City was built over the irradiated ashes of the Russo-Chinese war, the knights Hospitalier - the Knights of St john, were some of the first inhabitants. It was their desire to iradicate any kind of divine threat. but of course, the organization only had a certain number of members, and it soon became clear that evil could sneak in through the cracks of even the tightest net. They now police the underworld of Night City, attempting to keep people safe from the demons. Their ultimate goal is to eradicated them all together.
