The Grand Celestes Organization in Cumae: The Orbis | World Anvil

The Grand Celestes

Masters of the long game heist. Once robbed a state bank by building an access tunnel before the original foundation under the vault was being poured, waiting six years for the coffers to fill up before using their tunnel to breach the vault from underneath and get away with literally everything, leaving 100' of tunnel before caving it in so that investigators would certainly find and follow it, and know who had done it without any helpful evidence to that end.   The Grand Celestes are at the top of their game in the criminal world, and are considered a worldwide cartel along with the Steel Reciters. Where the Reciters are the absolute masters of assassinations, the Celestes are the ultimate burglars and jewel thieves; the main difference, other than the lethality of their work, is that the Celestes are a more furtive group, much harder to get in touch with even through proxies; the extreme level of secrecy seems suspicious in itself, leading many to suspect that some or all of the members of the gang must actually be nobles and highborn who would have great reasons to conceal their identities, even from other thieves. If this is the case, then their skill to rob upper class vaults becomes less amazing and more obvious. Occasionally donations to the arts, to relief efforts, or other causes are made by the Celestes, or at least by persons pretending to be them.

Identifiers:

The Grand Celestes generally don't sport a crest or distinctive tattoos, but they do tend to leave purposely tantalizing clues purely for publicity: an escape tunnel that continues for some distance before it's collapsed, sets of lockpicks with the handles removed as if the burglar has all the time in the world, and sometimes even jewels stolen in other heists.

Structure

Extremely centralized, and self-contained, but almost certainly operate out of the lovely, posh city of Mairie, the capitol of Minon; may actually be a relatively small group of 20 or 30 people who are able to move freely around the Orbis, committing their larger-than-life burglaries. Leader is thought to be a young female Halfling, but she may simply be the one who plans out the logistics of their highly publicized scores, and not a true leader of the organization. Her name and details are unknown.

Assets

Enormous, most of it tied up in gems stolen from idols, temples, and private collections. Whereabouts totally unknown.
