Mairie Settlement in Cumae: The Orbis | World Anvil

Mairie

Capitol of the Holy Kingdom of Minon, a Kingdom that encompasses both Minon proper and its client/vassal state Ysont. Mairie is the seat of both the government and the Valentinian faith, the Western version of Celestii Magni. Mairie is a pleasant and cozy capitol of narrow streets and charming candybox neighborhoods, the architecture showcasing the strong central planning that went into its construction, and continues as old buildings are replaced by new. Its streets are paved, with good gutters and well-maintained sidewalks; tracts of housing and shops are punctuated with paved recreational parks, museums, and an excess of green spaces.   Valentinism is a more formal and structured variation on Celestii Magni than the Basilideanism of the Khazigiri Empire, and this is evidenced by the regular layout of streets, the aesthetic coolness of the buildings, and the awesome wonder of its massive churches and cathedrals, nearly all of which are built or at least faced from the city quarry's white Nessont marble for which Mairie and Minon are world- famous.   Though there are slums to be found, and the poor cluster here no less so than in other world capitols, they are distributed much more widely rather than clustering in a single dense ghetto. There are wealthy estates surrounded by modest worker neighborhoods, and the manufacturing concerns are found in every district with their own small halo of low-value housing. Though this makes the areas more manpower-intensive to police, the lack of concentration has done wonders for reducing the power of the organized crime cartels in city limits. As such, the more affluent syndicates can be found - the Grand Celestes making their headquarters in the city, the Grey Heads, Steel Reciters and Obscurati also present; but the sprawling gangs of discontents are absent, and none of the Crows, Past Lifers or other bottom-feeder gangs seem to hold much influence at all. The lack of crime attracts a higher percentage of artisans and specialists, which serves to further enhance the city's beauty and its reputation as a city of museums and gold-clad, lion-helmeted soldiers, each considered something of a superhero by the average citizen.   Underneath the clean veneer, however, layers of corruption, religious intolerance and moral ambiguity have made their way into the highest levels of government, burning up a lot of time, treasure and energy on pointless, theatrical political activity. Taxes are high, and perhaps half of the tax collected ends up lining the pockets of the collectors before ever reaching the city treasury.
