PhoRiver

The thorp of PhoRiver is a tiny community of only 57 adults and 15 children set upon the banks of the sea. The thorp is named for the idea that the road leading north and south looks like a river when looking at a map. Its a pho (not real) river. And, it is kind of a river as people use it to traverse the coast. A clever Elf named Lorenne realized there was more than 600 miles between Roegen and Ferwood and weary travelers would need a safe place to relax and a need for goods. Also, the beach represents a mating location for large fish. Those fish provide a great opportunity for sales.   Even though PhoRiver is a tiny community. Lorenne  has attracted some great services. Many have realized the potential and have moved here providing a wonderful assortment of services available. PhoRiver is still a young thorp; but, much can be found here.

Government

Lorenne  wasn't elected. But, as founder, he declared himself as mayor and noone has challenged this. While there are folks who could easily take over, they just haven't made a play for the position. Afterall, why fix what's not broken.   The thorp's residents are happy with Lorenne . Taxes are low and the community growing gradually. There's not much interest in power in this small tightnet community. Everyone has their place and there is little interest in stepping on toes or competition.   Lorenne has instituted a no competition policy. Once a small business has been started, no one is allowed to compete. But, Lorenne's general store has everything else that might be needed.

Defences

As a small thorp, there is little in the way of defences. The local force is mostly made up of local townsfolk; but, there is a sheriff and 3 militia.    The sea protects from the west and the Suudaal Desert provides some protection from the east. But, no walls are erected.   You can find a small guard shack on the roads entering the thorp. And, sometimes, a militia will be manned there.

History

Lorenne (Elves) founded PhoRiver over 120 years ago. At the time, Lorenne  was a young elf looking for a convenient place to set up a shop and attempt to make a living selling goods. He settled upon this location for several reasons. First, the road is used by travelers to travel up the coast. This spot happens to be about halfway between two cities and where fish seem to mate annually providing food. With the Suudaal Desert also providing some protection to the east, the automatic commerce from travelers, and the water source, Lorenne  just could not pass this spot up.   On his own and with his own hands, Lorenne built a trading post right where PhoRiver Hall stands now. As business continued to increase, Lorenne added more goods and services and was able to make a living.   Others quickly caught on and started moving to the area. Some were travelers seeking to start businesses of their own in larger cities; but, caught the PhoRiver bug and settled here. Lorenne encouraged this knowing it would bolster more opportunity and more customers. Now, PhoRiver is a great stop along the coast offering many services to travelers.

Tourism

There isn't much tourism here. Mostly, people are just passing through. But, travelers often seek prayers at the chapels of the Travel God or the Sun God.    PhoRiver is known to be a comfortable and safe place to visit.
