Zhang Farmstead

The Zhang Farmstead resides along the Retribution River, about halfway between Lyashino Yōsai and Crossroads Proper. It is a simple wheat-farm that is currently on its second generation, owned by Zhang Wei.   The farm has suffered from yaogua attacks in the past, but since the establishment of the Shrine-Fortress and the increasing pretense of patrolling warriors from the various religions, the land hasn't seen an attack in the last decade. However, with tensions between the various factions continually growing, the Zhangs are beginning to worry that the Daoist warriors and the collective truce on the farmers feeding the city won't be enough to protect the farmstead from being sacked by fanatics.

History

The Zhang Farmstead is just one of the many farmsteads feeding Crossroads, founded by the original missionaries and new immigrants alike. The Zhang Farmstead, like most of the current farms and hamlets, was founded by Chinese Daoists seeking to settle a region that would have been theirs if it wasn't for the Cataclysm, and supporting the priests trying to heal the Retribution.   It has been a wheat farm for the entirety of its history, paying grain taxes to the Daoists and selling the rest to the city. Recently, Zhang Wei has made enough to afford a Budding Cattle, which he hopes will give them more variety to their diet, and increase their fortunes through its cheap meat production. However, the lady of the estate, Zhang Jing laments her husband's purchase, believing that such an unnatural beast will only bring ill fortune to the family.
