The Heart of Ilkana
The Heart of Ilkana is a spherical faceted jewel that channels magical energy. All those who observe it see it slightly differently, some say it is cleanly spherical, others that it has large flat planes. Some call it blue, others green, or red. There are those who say it changes color dependent on the present state of the Empire, or where things stand in the Dance. The light that the Heart emits pulses to a mysterious tempo, and a rare few hear an audible tone to its pulses, which has lead to an entire field of study documenting it, and great works of music and art depicting and interpreting its action.
Held by the Ilkani Emperor, the Heart of Ilkana links the Emperor to all citizens of the Empire, allowing for instantaneous communication between the Emperor and their subjects. It also channels magical energy to all citizens, that they can draw upon at need to reinforce their arcane workings. It is through the Heart that the Ilkani have achieved the level of precision, delicacy, and power in the arcane arts that they have. The stone is extremely powerful, and its full capability is only known to its bearer, although many have opined on its powers and limits over the millennia. It is said that it allows the Emperor to read the thoughts of their subjects, and to cast spells on them and through them at any distance. It is known that a citizen can reach out to the Emperor through the Heart to communicate with her, and she can respond. The Imperial Palace floats above Ilkana city by the power of the Heart, and study of that process and effect led to the creation of Ilkani skyships. Records of conversations with past Emperors indicate that the Heart contains the memories of all previous Emperors, which if true would grant each Emperor a massive source of historical knowledge and insight, a perpetually increasing Privy council of former Emperors all united to preserve the Empire. Significance
The Heart of Ilkana is the foundation of the Empire's might, the wellspring of its sorcerous power, and the source of their terrifying coordination. The bearer of the Heart is Emperor, without exception. If the Heart did not exist, the Empire would continue, but it would be a weaker, less unified entity.
