Isolde of Saumann

Captain Isolde Saumann

"I'm not a damned prop." The woman took off her epaulettes and threw them into the corner. "Just because they expect some swashbuckling fantasy girl from some infantile romance novel doesn't mean I need to fulfill their wishes. I will attend wearing an outfit from a high couturier, as befits a noblewoman of my station."
Riadh sighed. "Listen, Isolde, I know better than anyone what your general opinion is on these sorts of things, but think about the next Western expedition! We've got to butter up a sponsor or else you'll be stuck in the Capital doing book signings." She grinned. "Think about all of the books you'd need to sign."
Isolde, Captain of the Skyhawk, only gave a guttural grunt at the notion as she fell backwards onto her bed. "Just for once I'd like to be out on the streets as just another damned person, and get rid of all this 'grand explorer' drivel."
"Then you shouldn't have written your books. You're being childish." Riadh picked up the discarded epaulettes and placed them back on the desk. "Alternately, you could just go in disguise."
The other woman rolled her eyes and pointed at the thin scar that traced down her chin. "There's nothing that would cover this up. In any case, why don't I just not go? Constantine's wonderful party can go on without me."
"Yes, well, this party is in your honor, so he may be unhappy if you're not there." Riadh sighed again. "How about this. Put on your captain's outfit-"
"-costume-"
"Okay, fine, costume, and let's go find that couturier you want. Maybe we can get something suitably dressy for you that still says 'naval' to the party guests."

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Isolde is in peak physical condition, as befits a naval captain of a small crew and an accomplished fighter.

Identifying Characteristics

A long blade scar from her upper right ear past her chin and down her neck is instantly recognizable by those who know her, but nobody knows for sure how she received it.

Physical quirks

Isolde's left eye has poor vision compared to the right, attributable to a wound she sustained at some point in the past. She favors her right eye and right arm.

Apparel & Accessories

Normally wearing working sailor's garb or an adventurer's outfit, Isolde has a 'Captain's' uniform she wears as an ornament for book signings and social events.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Isolde was born to House Saumann, a merchant house in the 'second tier' of nobility. Vivacious and animated to a fault, her parents despaired of her ability or desire to become an insurer and inherit the family business, so they consented when she declared her intention to join the Principality Navy at the age of sixteen. Three years service on a Principality Siege-Sail gave her a taste for seafaring, and Isolde later served as an officer on a trading caravel.   Her first brush with fame occurred when a Great Nautilus attacked her ship while crossing the Bui Sea. The caravel's captain and the other officers were drowned when the Nautilus tore the ship into halves; rallying the survivors, Isolde was able to lash the remnants of the ship together into a floating hulk and drift it onto land. She and the sailors she helped save became the first to ever survive a Nautilus attack, and she was gifted a power-sail by the Principality in recognition of her valor.   Subsequent exploits include conducting exploratory trade missions to the farthest reaches of the frontier in Eastern Saibh, the discovery of a number of islands far west in the Feryll Sea, and two aborted attempts to circumnavigate the world by travelling westward. Each voyage resulted in a book by popular demand; each book cemented her fame in the eyes of the public.

Education

Isolde received a noble's education through the age of sixteen, subsequent military training from the Principality, and apprenticed under a naval captain for some years.

Employment

Isolde is a private explorer holding a commission from the Principality, to survey Principality waters and those beyond, with a generous stipend to fund the work.

Social

Social Aptitude

Isolde is brusque and blunt normally, as any other sailor, and exhibits few of the qualities that other noblewomen would normally express. This plays into her public image nicely, but she is unhappy with her typecasting.

Wealth & Financial state

Isolde owns her power-sail, the Skyhawk, and has a large amount of wealth held in trust by her House. Her trade voyages are highly lucrative, but she allows her family to take care of the economic aspect of her work. With that being said, long range exploration is quite expensive, and most such voyages require her to find a private sponsor of some sort.
