Warrens

The Nosferatu Brood

The clan of obscurity and hideousness, the Nosferatu are players more than leaders. The clan is very mysterious to outsiders who know little of what goes on in the murky depths. Those few that do get a glimpse are either too scared to share or know it’s best not to. The Sewer Rats are all about secrets and information dealing. They do this for two reasons: firstly to gain leverage and position with those “topside” and secondly, and more importantly, to be prepared for what hunts the ugliest of the ugly.

The Warrens

In every city that has at least one or two Nosferatu, a Warren exists. The Warren has several components and each is unique from city to city. Warrens are almost as much an entity as the Sewer Rats that comprise it.

The Haven

The Haven is the communal home for all Nosferatu who dwell in the city. It is the closest thing to an Elysium as a clan can attain by itself. Almost everything is run out of the Haven. It is the place the Lore master preaches and the others share information. The Haven is considered top secret, and its location is never to be revealed to anyone but another confirmed Nosferatu.

Traps

Each Warren has in place (usually) an elaborate set of traps in order to keep overly curious things at bay. Their locations are kept secret and some may even be lost or forgotten. This makes traversing the Sewers always dangerous, even for the savviest Nosferatu. Constant vigilance and caution are always required. When a Nosferatu tells a top-sider to stay away, it is as much for their safety as it is for secrecy.

Spawning Pool

A little-known secret, but a common trait of all warrens, is the existence of a spawning pool. The spawning pool is a collection of insects and all kinds of animals who drink and grow saturated with the blood of all the Nosferatu in the Warren. This interesting ritual creates a swarm of animals that can be used if needed to protect, defend, or distract.

Nosferatu Leadership

There are two positions of leadership within the Nosferatu, the Primogen and the Warren Chief. The twin positions can be held by the same person, but do not need to be. Contrary to recent politics, neither position is optional: while one person can hold both positions, they must both be held by someone.

Primogen

The Nosferatu Primogen is responsible for all negotiation and commerce above-ground. By necessity, this is a member of the Camarilla, and generally a Warren member capable of intrigue and politics. It does not need to be - and generally is not - the Nosferatu with the highest Clan Status. While this position is often considered a "front" for the Warren Chief, the Primogen does, in fact, have final say over negotiations and relations among the other clans. The Primogen is the ruler "topside".

Warren Chief

The Warren Chief is responsible for the defense of the Warren and the unity of the Clan. The Warren Chief can be a member of any (or no) Sect, and is always the Nosferatu with the highest Clan status. The Warren-Chief's influence is kept secret from "Topsiders", and he never negotiates for the clan among outsiders. The Warren Chief has complete control of the Nosferatu underground and is the only Nosferatu with ultimate authority to permit punishment of his brothers underground.

Overlap in Authority

In the event the jurisdictions overlap, such as a punishment demanded by the Camarilla of a Nosferatu, the Primogen and Warren Chief will confer on the matter, but the Warren Chief, having the higher Clan Status, will always have the final word. This does not, however, stop the Primogen from removing the status of the Nosferatu involved and effectively restricting them to the underground. The Warren Chief and Primogen are generally reluctant to directly oppose each other; both have the ability to make things very unpleasant for the other if they feel slighted or abused.

Brothers and Sisters

There is no clan more like a family than the Nosferatu. They may bicker from time to time like siblings, but the familial support structure is a prominent element in clan politics. This relates most resoundingly within each individual warren and even extends to warrens in the same region to warrens on a different continent. There are some general guidelines and expected behaviors that every Nosferatu should know:
  1. Brothers do not reveal secrets to “topsiders” that concern or affect another Brother.
  2. Brothers are to help other Brothers when they are asked for aid.
  3. Brothers are respectful of other Brothers, no matter what sect he or she claims allegiance to.
These are not official or established rules, but they are good rules to live by for a Nosferatu. There is a reason why the Nosferatu are so concerned with sticking together and gathering as much information as possible. This reason is a closely guarded secret that very few non-Nosferatu ever hear a hint about. For even if they did know, they’d scoff at the idea. The Nosferatu live every night in fear, but not from some crazed Ventrue or overzealous Tremere, but from several of their own. Every Nosferatu, more or less, knows that “they” hunt for them tirelessly. Fledgling Sewer Rats are told tales of brothers who go off on their own and never return and are never heard from again. Word may reach that an entire Warren has gone missing. Events such as these are closely watched and monitored by Warrens worldwide. The Nosferatu must remain brothers and sisters, or fall to “them.”
