Synthetic Blood - Sub Plot
There is a Corporate Pharmaceutical Company in Downtown that has been performing research on how to create fake or synthetic blood. It is still very under the radar, even in the mortal world. Despite this, they have sent out a small supply to a few locations to illegally test the supply on living humans. The Lab is using a few different methods trying to create this blood.
Synthetic Blood Production:
- Using regular test tubes like they do with artificial insemination.
- Producing blood through lab grown organs using Stem Cells.
- The lab has been harvesting stem cells to accelerate their research and skip the bureaucracy of getting donors.
- They have been harvesting Stem Cells by: Kidnapping pregnant women, typically the homeless and other people from the lowest rings of society.The Corporation has been purchasing embryos from a few back-alley doctors who perform abortions for anyone and everyone. Due to being paid a significant amount for each embryo, the doctors have been pushing to increase their business. They have lowered the prices they charge clients for Abortions (so they are getting paid a 2nd time for the same thing.).
Beginning of Story:
Saoirse has developed a system of acquiring blood bags from Nurse Dot at St. Jude’s Hospital. One of her Ghoul Allies goes to the hospital and pretends to go in for regular infusions. Nurse Dot always takes care of him and slides the blood bags into the backpack the Ghoul brings with him every time under the guise of bringing his laptop since infusions take a couple of hours. Just before Saoirse must head to the Sheriff's Office to be assigned the mission of locating the missing Primogen Sophie, she will have been told by one of the Ghouls that Nurse Dot has some special blood bags to give Saoirse and that the Ghoul will picking them up in the next couple of nights. He'll say that Nurse Dot mentioned something about some company testing fake blood and that Nurse Dot thought you might be interested in trying it. Saoirse is planning on having Dr. Albert Beitman look at this Synthetic Blood for anything he can tell her about it. Dr. Beitman will use his fancy new lab and experience with Genetics to investigate it. Saoirse asked Minister Eli if he knows anything about this, which he does not. But he agreed to look into it.Dr Beitman’s Results Scene:
Location: Beitman’s Lab or via Phone NPC’s Present: Albert Beitman Scene Description: If Travis is available to join for this scene, he can describe his lab and how the Scene plays out. Otherwise, the following happens: Beitman’s Lab is located towards the middle of one of the many Skyscrapers in the Tech District. His lab consists of multiple floors, but Saoirse can’t tell exactly how many. It is equipped with what looks like the state-of-the-art equipment, and a group of dedicated and focused staff. One of Beitman’s assistants will greet the Coterie when they enter and will lead them back into a small office located on the corner of the floor, so that 2 of the 4 walls are windows looking out at the city. Dr. Beitman sits at a modern solid oak desk, with a few papers in front of him from which he reads. Beitman’s office is meticulously clean and neat. Beitman will hand over a file with his results on the bloodwork. He will explain what he learned (Listed Below). This scene could be done via a phone call or by picking up paperwork showing Beitman’s findings which would be a simple hand wave scene. Key Information from Beitman:- It’s not actual blood as we know it. It is a substance that is a collection of cells that are biologically identical to those found in natural blood. However, this blood is still missing a various critical aspect.
- Beitman will go on a rant about the genes, cells, etc. in such a way that Saoirse wouldn’t be able to keep up. Key things are that he can tell Banshee Pharmaceuticals is using Stems Cells as the foundation for how they are producing this synthetic blood, and probably are using genetic manipulation of DNA/other cell types. But this would require an immense amount of Stem Cells to make this kind of progress.
- Although impressive, the synthetic blood is far from complete. This Blood wouldn’t be able to function as needed for a mortal to survive with and would not be able to sustain a Kindred.
- The Company that is working on this is a subsidiary of General Kinetics Corporation which is known as Banshee Pharmaceuticals. Which performs research and development of weapons and armor for the Military/Governments and any private organizations or people who can afford them.
