Kyro

The call of ancient Kyro is strong in the hearts of all Lasskyrs.  My days, they wind down to to the zero count.  It is my most fervent wish as I scribe these final words that I may take my leave and rest my eyes overlooking that city, that golden city, and join with Creation as the Lantern sets for me one last time.   -Chom Biitulaay, Reflections on a Life Lived Too Long, epilogue, p 409
Kyro was the ancient capital of Lasskyrolia, Land of the Lantern.  It was the first great city of Creation, founded almost 5000 years ago on the western edge of one of the Great Lakes.  Most of the original settlement now lies underwater but since the canals were built to connect the Great Lakes the city boundaries have remained in place.  It rises up from the water's edge like a great staircase with each level a purposeful expansion based on the needs of the time.   The lower level along the water is devoted to trade and commerce.  The next level up contains manufacturing centers that take in raw materials from the surrounding hills and transform them into finished goods.  The third level contains all the government and administrative buildings along with the residences of both lords and clerks.  The fourth level is given over to the arts and sciences.  The fifth level is the newest, only completed 300 years ago and it is the seat of the Great Temple and the headquarters of The Order of the Eight.  Situated amongst wide boulevards and greenbelts the two great buildings and all their associated shrines, meeting halls, and counting houses sit majestically overlooking the city.   Even though Lasskyr City become the capital some time after the building of the Grand Canal, every Lasskyr maintained an emotional connection to Kyro.  Although The Order of the Eight has a prominent cathedral in the capital city of Ennostwell, it is in Kyro that they keep their leadership.  Every temple of The Order recognizes the Great Temple's authority and sends tithes of obeisance there as a means of currying favor.
